The Times Tel-Aviv based correspondent\u00a0Gabrielle Weiniger<\/a>\u00a0co-authored the most infamous piece published by the outlet since the\u00a0Oct. 7 massacre<\/a>.<\/p>\n

As we demonstrated in\u00a0a post<\/a>\u00a0at the time, that June 7, 2024\u00a0article<\/a>, \u201cIsrael says Hamas weaponised rape. Does the evidence add up?,\u201d co-written by\u00a0Catherine Philp<\/a>\u00a0(whose visceral hostility to Israel we\u2019ve\u00a0documented<\/a>\u00a0for over a decade), tried to undermine\u00a0ubiquitous<\/a>\u00a0evidence<\/a>\u00a0that Hamas\u00a0used rape<\/a>\u00a0as a weapon of war.<\/p>\n

The piece was so shoddy and dishonest that the outlet received a rebuke by one of the Israeli women interviewed for the piece, Professor Ruth Halperin-Kaddari, who heads the\u00a0Dinah Project,<\/a>\u00a0the organization which has been\u00a0meticulously documenting<\/a>\u00a0the rape of women, girls, and men by Gaza terrorists since Oct. 7, 2023.<\/p>\n

Halperin-Kaddari\u00a0accused<\/a>\u00a0the co-authors of grossly misrepresenting her words in an attempt to \u201cdiscredit and gaslight the victims of heinous acts of sexual violence.\u201d<\/p>\n

Though we complained to top editors at the outlet, who\u00a0assured us<\/a>\u00a0they would investigate the accusations by Halperin-Kaddari, we never received a reply \u2013 and the piece was never amended. (Nor was an apology offered, by editors or the co-authors, to Israeli rape victims.)<\/p>\n

Last week, Weiniger authored another widely condemned Times\u00a0article,<\/a>\u00a0one which legitimized the conspiracy theory that the late sexual predator Jeffrey Epstein was a Mossad agent.\u00a0 Shortly after the Feb. 8 piece was published, it was revealed that the anonymous FBI source \u2013 framed by Weiniger as someone of importance \u2013 who was \u201cconvinced that Epstein was a co-opted Mossad agent\u201d\u00a0turned out<\/a>\u00a0to be\u00a0a\u00a0fraudster<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0Holocaust denier<\/a>\u00a0named Charles Johnson.<\/p>\n

How the piece \u2013 which, based on zero evidence, advanced an anti-Israel conspiracy that not even the Guardian has promoted \u2013 got past Times editors represents more evidence that \u2013 at least as it pertains to Israel \u2013 their reporters are not held accountable for egregious breaches of basic journalistic standards.<\/p>\n

Weiniger further tarnished her professional reputation when she inexplicably posted on X a clear AI fake photo purporting to depict Epstein with Israeli president Isaac Herzog \u2013 despite the fact that Herzog wasn\u2019t mentioned in her Times article.<\/p>\n

Though she eventually deleted the post,\u00a0and<\/a>\u00a0apologized<\/a>, the original \u201cMossad-Epstein\u2019 hoax is still up on the Times\u2019 website, and hasn\u2019t been amended to note the identity of the FBI source cited by Weiniger.<\/p>\n

Though the rape-denial article from 2024 and the Epstein-Mossad hoax published last week represent two of the most egregious examples of Weiniger\u2019s unambiguous bias against Israel, an egregious omission in a piece published yesterday is also worth noting.<\/p>\n

The\u00a0piece<\/a>\u00a0(\u201cHamas warned to disarm or face fresh Israeli military operation,\u201d Feb. 17) includes the following [emphasis added]:<\/p>\n

The calm has been punctured by sporadic Israeli strikes.\u00a0Overnight bombardment on Saturday killed 11, the Hamas-run health ministry in Gaza said.\u00a0More than 600 Palestinians have been killed since October\u2019s ceasefire came into force, according to Gazan officials<\/p>\n

First, no information is provided by Weiniger concerning the terrorist ceasefire violations the previous day that had prompted \u201cIsraeli strikes.\u201d<\/p>\n

As our co-editor Hadar Sela\u00a0documented<\/a>\u00a0in a post yesterday, the\u00a0first of those incidents<\/a>\u00a0on Feb. 14 involved a Palestinian who was shot dead\u00a0after crossing<\/a> the \u201cyellow line<\/a>\u201d\u00a0in the north of the Gaza Strip and posing a threat to soldiers in the area under Israeli control. \u00a0The\u00a0second incident<\/a>\u00a0\u2013 also in northern Gaza \u2013 involved\u00a0five armed terrorists<\/a>\u00a0who\u00a0exited<\/a>\u00a0a tunnel and entered a damaged building\u00a0on the Israeli-controlled side<\/a>\u00a0of the \u201cyellow line\u201d near troops<\/a>\u00a0operating in the area. At least two of the terrorists were eliminated.<\/p>\n

Similarly, Weiniger\u2019s following sentence, where readers are told that \u201cmore than 600 Palestinians have been killed since October\u2019s ceasefire came into force,\u201d completely erases near-daily\u00a0Hamas ceasefire violations<\/a>\u00a0\u2013 including attacks over recent months which\u00a0killed five Israeli soldiers<\/a>\u00a0\u2013 that prompted IDF retaliatory attacks on terror targets, resulting in the alleged death count cited.<\/p>\n

Though we\u2019ll be complaining about Weiniger\u2019s grossly misleading omission, which represents a larger Times\u00a0pattern<\/a>\u00a0of erasing Hamas from the post-Oct. 7 battlefield, our experience with editors\u2019 unwillingness to hold their journalists accountable gives us little hope for a serious, professional response.<\/p>\n
