(Bloomberg) \u2014 Stocks rallied in Asia after a rebound in tech and robust economic data boosted US equities. Oil held gains after its biggest jump since October.<\/p>\n
The MSCI Asia Pacific Index climbed as much as 0.6%, led by South Korea, whose tech-heavy benchmark rose to a record. That was after the S&P 500 rose 0.6% Wednesday and the Nasdaq 100 gained 0.8%. Financial markets remain shut in mainland China, Hong Kong and Taiwan for the Lunar New Year holiday.<\/p>\n
The rebound in tech shares offers a sign that concern over the disruption of artificial intelligence were easing, just as several stock pickers surveyed the wreckage for buying opportunities.<\/p>\n
\u201cYou are seeing that those ability to find growth and opportunity outside of the Mag Seven complex and the AI complex as well, but that\u2019s also on a geographical basis as well,\u201d Chris Weston, head of research at Pepperstone Group Ltd., said on Bloomberg Television. \u201cWe\u2019ve seen big outperformance for a while now from Europe and Japan and the Kospi.\u201d<\/p>\n
The MSCI Asia Pacific gauge has climbed about 12% this year, while Korea\u2019s Kospi has surged more than 30%. Those gains overwhelm those of stocks in the US, where the S&P 500 Index is little changed since the end of December.<\/p>\n
Samsung Electronics Co. shares jumped as much as 4.7% to a fresh record following a newspaper report that the company is negotiating to sell a new generation of ultrafast chips at around $700, or about 20%-to-30% higher than its previous model.<\/p>\n
The Australian dollar strengthened against all its major peers after a report showed the nation\u2019s unemployment rate hold at 4.1%, boosting bets on an interest-rate hike in May. The Aussie climbed as much as 0.4% to 70.70 US cents.<\/p>\n
\u201cA solid Australian labor market report with no rise in the unemployment rate which remains on the tighter side, should help cement support for the Aussie above the 70 US cent mark,\u201d said Rodrigo Catril, a strategist at National Australia Bank Ltd.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe S&P 500\u2019s proximity to previous all-time highs shows the current rotation within US equity markets \u2014 which favors alpha stars like materials \u2014 isn\u2019t an indictment of the US economy. Oil steadied after jumping on Wednesday following a report that American military intervention in Iran may come sooner than expected.<\/p>\n
Brent held above $70 a barrel, after adding 4.3% on Wednesday, while West Texas Intermediate traded near $65. Axios reported that any US military operation would likely be a weeks-long campaign and that Israel\u2019s government is pushing for a scenario targeting regime change in the Islamic Republic.<\/p>\n
Gold was flat, after rising 2% on Wednesday, with some Asian markets still closed for holidays and traders focused on the Fed\u2019s next move on interest rates.<\/p>\n
Economic data published Wednesday showing the biggest increase in US industrial production in January bolstered investor sentiment, while orders for business equipment rose in December by more than projected and housing starts hit a five-month high.<\/p>\n
Stock market bulls shrugged off minutes of the Federal Open Market Committee\u2019s January meeting that revealed \u201cseveral participants\u201d said they would have preferred a post-meeting statement that raised the possibility of raising the federal funds rate \u201cif inflation remains at above-target levels.\u201d<\/p>\n
Fed funds futures pricing on Wednesday indicated traders slightly pared bets on rate cuts this year but still expect a further two 25 basis-point reductions in 2026.<\/p>\n
\u201cFrom our perspective, the minutes support our view that rate cuts are off the table for the foreseeable future,\u201d said Charlie Ripley, a fund manager at Allianz Investment Management.<\/p>\n
