Dave Grohl<\/a> has shared that Foo Fighters<\/a> found it \u201creally complicated\u201d to continue after the death of Taylor Hawkins<\/a>, and opened up for the first time about parting ways with Josh Freese.<\/p>\n

Hawkins passed away at the age of 50 in March 2022. He was found dead in his hotel room<\/a> hours before the Foos were scheduled to play a festival in Bogot\u00e1, Colombia.<\/p>\n

The following year, Freese (A Perfect Circle<\/a>, Nine Inch Nails<\/a>) stepped in as touring drummer and continued to perform with the band until his abrupt departure in May 2025<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Since then, Ilan Rubin has taken on the role of sticksman<\/a> \u2013 with him and Freese swapping groups; Rubin left Nine Inch Nails to join Foos<\/a>, and Freese returned to work with Trent Reznor<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Yesterday (Thursday February 19), Foo Fighters announced their 12th full-length effort \u2018Your Favorite Toy\u2019 <\/a>\u00a0while sharing its massive title track.<\/p>\n

Frontman Grohl also spoke to Zane Lowe for Apple Music 1<\/a> about what fans could expect from the project, saying it is stacked with \u201cnoisy, loud bangers\u201d<\/a> that feel like they\u2019re from \u201cthe old days\u201d.<\/p>\n

He then went on to open up about continuing with the band following the death of Hawkins, and added that not a day goes by that he and his bandmates don\u2019t miss the drummer.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe had Taylor Hawkins as our drummer for 25 years and, beyond being an amazing drummer, he was this incredible spirit. He was this incredible human being and he was our brother. He was our best friend,\u201d he said. \u201cSo, continuing after Taylor was really complicated, not just for us, but for any drummer that was going to come in to like, you know, fill his shoes\u2026 you know.\u201d<\/p>\n

He continued, adding that the interview happened to be taking place on what would have been Hawkins\u2019 birthday.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s Taylor\u2019s birthday today. And so, we wake up in the morning and everybody just texts about how much we miss him and how the world\u2019s not the same without him, but we still feel him very much,\u201d Grohl continued.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe always talk about him every fucking day. In everything we do we want to have that energy \u2013 we want to have that energy for Taylor.\u201d<\/p>\n

The frontman also broke his silence on the departure of Freese from the line-up \u2013 a move that the drummer said left him \u201cshocked and disappointed\u201d<\/a>.<\/p>\n

After praising Freese for his ability to work with \u201ceveryone from Michael Buble<\/a> to The Offspring<\/a>\u201c, Grohl went on to say that they all had a \u201cgreat time\u201d touring with him for just over a year, before everyone took a step away from the band in 2024.<\/p>\n

\u201cIn those six or seven months, as a band, we talked about what to do next, a new direction, and thought, \u2018OK, let\u2019s call Josh and let him know that we are going to move on with a different drummer\u2019,\u201d Grohl added, also sharing that the decision \u201cdidn\u2019t happen overnight\u201d.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe called, as a band, all of us called, it wasn\u2019t just me,\u201d he continued. \u201cBasically, we called Josh, and were like, \u2018Hey man, that was awesome. That was such a blast, thank you so much, but we are going to move on and find another drummer.\u2019<\/p>\n

\u201cAfter that, we didn\u2019t make a press release, tweet anything or do interviews. We didn\u2019t say anything. Since then, there\u2019s been a lot of talk about it, but I think Josh said it best when he said that he didn\u2019t feel our music really resonated with him<\/a>, and that\u2019s really important.\u201d<\/p>\n

Since the sacking, Freese has spoken of life after his exit from the band<\/a>, saying \u201cno one should feel sorry\u201d for him.<\/p>\n

Foos\u2019 new record will arrive on April 24, and marks the follow-up to 2023\u2019s \u2018But Here We Are\u2019<\/a>.<\/p>\n

It will feature last year\u2019s \u2018Asking For A Friend\u2019<\/a>, and comes after Grohl had confirmed that a new record was finished in January<\/a>, with the Foos subsequently sharing some teasers online<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Earlier this month, the group updated their website and posted more previews of new music<\/a>.<\/p>\n

They will head out on the road in the UK and Europe this year for a run of huge stadium shows<\/a>, and are set to play some North American dates over the summer and autumn<\/a>.<\/p>\n
