In an interview on the Tucker Carlson Show podcast, US Ambassador to Israel Mike Huckabee<\/a> claimed that although he believed it was \u201cfine\u201d if Israel claimed extensive territory in the Middle East, citing a biblical interpretation, he insisted that Jerusalem is not attempting to do this.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Nonetheless, his remarks sparked strong criticism from Arab leaders.<\/p>\n

Carlson observed the territory referenced was \u201cbasically the entire Middle East.\u201d He continued: \u201cDoes Israel have the right to that land?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cNot sure we\u2019d go that far,\u201d Huckabee replied. \u201cIt would be a big piece of land.\u201d<\/p>\n

Carlson repeated: \u201cDoes Israel have the right to that land?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cIt would be fine if they took it all,\u201d Huckabee responded, but added, \u201cI don\u2019t think that\u2019s what we\u2019re talking about here today.\u201d<\/p>\n

Carlson asked: \u201cYou think it would be fine if the state of Israel took over all of Jordan?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cThey\u2019re not trying to take over Jordan. They\u2019re not trying to take over Syria. They\u2019re not trying to take over Iraq or anywhere else, but they do want to protect their people,\u201d Huckabee responded.<\/p>\n

\u201cI think you\u2019re missing something because they\u2019re not asking to go back to take all of that, but they are asking to at least take the land that they now occupy, they now live in, they now own legitimately, and it is a safe haven for them,\u201d Huckabee added.<\/p>\n

Arab governments reacted sharply on Saturday to remarks by Huckabee, describing them as inconsistent with diplomatic practice and international norms.<\/p>\n

Jordan\u2019s Foreign Ministry spokesman Fuad al-Majali denounced the comments as \u201cabsurd and provocative statements,\u201d saying they amounted to \u201can assault on the sovereignty of the countries of the region and a flagrant breach of international law.\u201d Egypt\u2019s Foreign Ministry likewise rejected the remarks, calling them a \u201cblatant violation\u201d of diplomatic norms and saying they ran counter to President Donald Trump\u2019s stated vision for ending the war in Gaza.<\/p>\n

The secretary-general of the Arab League<\/a>, which represents 22 member states, Ahmed Aboul Gheit, said Huckabee\u2019s comments were at odds with long-standing US policy positions. Palestinian officials also weighed in, urging the Trump administration to adopt a \u201cclear and explicit stance\u201d in response to the statements.\u00a0<\/p>\n
