{"id":307310,"date":"2026-02-24T07:07:10","date_gmt":"2026-02-24T07:07:10","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/il\/307310\/"},"modified":"2026-02-24T07:07:10","modified_gmt":"2026-02-24T07:07:10","slug":"coalition-bill-to-give-rabbinate-kotel-power","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/il\/307310\/","title":{"rendered":"Coalition bill to give Rabbinate Kotel power"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Multiple coalition parties pledged on Sunday to advance a bill sponsored by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.jpost.com\/diaspora\/antisemitism\/article-855485\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">MK Avi Maoz<\/a> (Noam) that would grant the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.jpost.com\/israel-news\/article-886505\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Chief Rabbinate<\/a> authority to determine prayer arrangements at the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.jpost.com\/israel-news\/article-886982\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Western Wall<\/a>, following a High Court ruling ordering upgrades to the site\u2019s egalitarian prayer plaza.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article-paragraph-section article-body-paragraph\">The Ministerial Committee for Legislation canceled its scheduled meeting on Sunday, ahead of an expected vote that would have determined whether the bill had government backing. Despite the cancellation, the legislation is still slated for a preliminary reading in the Knesset plenum on Wednesday.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article-paragraph-section article-body-paragraph\">Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu cancelled the vote in the ministerial committee to avoid a crisis with Diaspora Jewry, who would widely oppose such a bill, KAN News reported on Sunday.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article-paragraph-section article-body-paragraph\">Following the cancellation of the ministerial committee meeting, Maoz called on all members of Knesset to vote in favor of his bill, claiming that it would preserve the integrity of the site and work against the High Court ruling \u201cto divide the Wall.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"article-paragraph-section article-body-paragraph\">Multiple coalition parties said that their faction members would back the bill.<\/p>\n<p><img alt=\"\" loading=\"lazy\" width=\"822\" height=\"829\" decoding=\"async\" data-nimg=\"1\" style=\"color:transparent\" src=\"https:\/\/images.jpost.com\/image\/upload\/f_auto,fl_lossy\/c_fill,g_faces:center,h_537,w_822\/707643\"\/><\/p>\n<p>The haredi (ultra-Orthodox) parties, Shas and United Torah Judaism (UTJ), said they would support the bill, in a joint statement made with the right-wing Otzma Yehudit Party led by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.jpost.com\/israel-news\/politics-and-diplomacy\/article-887378\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">National Security Minister Itamar Ben-Gvir<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article-paragraph-section article-body-paragraph\">The Religious Zionist Party, led by Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich, also expressed backing for the bill.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article-paragraph-section article-body-paragraph\">\u201cRegarding the exact wording of the law, the Religious Zionist Party [HaTzionut HaDatit] will consult with Israel\u2019s chief rabbis in order to reach the optimal formulation,\u201d the party said in a statement.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article-paragraph-section article-body-paragraph\">\u201cWe will not allow the High Court to decide the future of the Western Wall,\u201d it added.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article-paragraph-section article-body-paragraph\">Justice Minister Yariv Levin (Likud) said he, too, would support the bill, despite it not receiving approval in the ministerial committee due to the cancellation.<\/p>\n<p>&#8216;Tell the High Court, Enough is enough&#8217;<\/p>\n<p class=\"article-paragraph-section article-body-paragraph\">\u201cUnder these circumstances, there is no government position, and therefore I intend to vote in favor of the bill in the plenum. I call on all Knesset members, and particularly coalition members, to do the same and to tell the High Court: Enough is enough.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"article-paragraph-section article-body-paragraph\">Moaz\u2019s legislation, referred to as the \u201cWestern Wall Bill,\u201d would determine what is considered to be \u201cdesecration\u201d at Jewish holy sites based on the rulings of the Chief Rabbinate.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article-paragraph-section article-body-paragraph\">The bill is an amendment to the existing law concerning the holy site.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article-paragraph-section article-body-paragraph\">According to Maoz, the law was originally enacted in 1967, following the Six-Day War, and his amendment seeks to remove ambiguity and establish explicitly that only the Chief Rabbinate can determine regulations at the Western Wall.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article-paragraph-section article-body-paragraph\">Critics say this would essentially undermine the ruling of the High Court.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article-paragraph-section article-body-paragraph\">The Thursday High Court decision had ruled to complete the necessary bureaucratic steps required to restore and upgrade the Ezrat Yisrael plaza, the southern prayer area designated for mixed-gender and non-Orthodox worship under the government-backed 2016 so-called \u201cKotel Agreement.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"article-paragraph-section article-body-paragraph\">Pluralism advocates welcomed the High Court decision as a significant step toward restoring physical access to the egalitarian section, while religious authorities and ultra-Orthodox political leaders sharply criticized the court\u2019s intervention, arguing that matters concerning prayer arrangements at the Wall fell outside its jurisdiction.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article-paragraph-section article-body-paragraph\">MK Gilad Kariv (The Democrats), the former CEO of the Israel Movement for Reform and Progressive Judaism, sharply criticized the bill\u2019s expected advancement in the plenum.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article-paragraph-section article-body-paragraph\">\u201cAs long as the prime minister allows coalition members a free vote on this issue, postponing the discussion [in the Ministerial Committee for Legislation] amounts to little more than a meaningless gesture.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"article-paragraph-section article-body-paragraph\">\u201cOn behalf of the majority of the Jewish people in Israel and in the Diaspora, we demand that the prime minister not allow coalition members to drag the Jewish world into an unnecessary and unfair dispute, amid the wave of antisemitism that is striking individuals and communities of all streams without distinction,\u201d Kariv said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article-paragraph-section article-body-paragraph\">\u201cNetanyahu knows very well that there is no real drama in the High Court\u2019s recent ruling, and we demand that he curb the poisonous wave of incitement and propaganda. If he does not do so, some of Israel\u2019s greatest friends in the Jewish world will,\u201d Kariv added.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article-paragraph-section article-body-paragraph\">World Zionist Organization (WZO) Vice Chairman Yizhar Hess also condemned the bill\u2019s advancement, saying that it was extreme and would \u201cradically undermine\u201d past agreements that have \u201callowed for countless Jews to pray according to their custom at the Egalitarian Kotel.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Any prayer the Chief Rabbinate doesn\u2019t approve would be \u2018desecration\u2019<\/p>\n<p class=\"article-paragraph-section article-body-paragraph\">\u201cFunctionally, this law defines any Jewish prayer that the Chief Rabbinate doesn\u2019t approve of as \u2018desecration\u2019 and allows for the arrest and imprisonment of those who do so.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article-paragraph-section article-body-paragraph\">\u201cThis would be a declaration of war on world Jewry that has stood by Israel\u2019s side these past challenging years,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article-paragraph-section article-body-paragraph\">\u201cIt\u2019s hard to think of a less Zionist, less Jewish, and more damaging proposal.
