Angelina Jolie has sounded the alarm on free speech in America, saying the country is facing \u201cvery, very heavy times.\u201d<\/p>\n

The actress was asked<\/a> what she\u2019s afraid of as an artist and American while promoting her new film Couture at Spain\u2019s San Sebasti\u00e1n Film Festival on Sunday.<\/p>\n

Jolie paused and took a deep sigh before answering the question.<\/p>\n

\u201cI love my country, but at this time, I don\u2019t recognize my country,\u201d said Jolie, 50, according to Deadline<\/a>. \u201cI\u2019ve always lived internationally, my family is international, my friends, my life. My worldview is equal, united, international, so anything anywhere that divides or, of course, limits personal expressions and freedoms from anyone, I think, is very dangerous.\u201d<\/p>\n

Jolie didn\u2019t cite specifics, but her comment arrives just days after ABC pulled Jimmy Kimmel\u2019s late night show amid threats from Trump-appointed FCC chair Brendan Carr over a joke the host made about Charlie Kirk\u2019s assassination.<\/p>\n

\u201cThese are such serious times that we have to be careful not to say things casually, so I\u2019ll be careful during a press conference, but to say that, of course, like all of you and everyone watching, these are very, very heavy times we are living in together,\u201d she concluded.<\/p>\n

Kirk\u2019s murder has put the U.S. on edge, with President Donald Trump and his supporters pledging to crack down on a violent \u201cradical left,\u201d while critics warn that the Trump administration is clamping down on free speech.<\/p>\n

The actress, a longtime advocate for refugees, previously spoke out against Trump during his first term, when she penned a New York Times<\/a> op-ed condemning the president\u2019s \u201cMuslim ban.\u201d<\/p>\n

Jolie\u2019s father, actor Jon Voight, on the other hand, has been described as<\/a> \u201cHollywood\u2019s most outspoken Trump supporter<\/a>.\u201d Trump selected Voight as a \u201cspecial ambassador\u201d to Hollywood this year, alongside Sylvester Stallone and Mel Gibson.<\/p>\n
