{"id":308558,"date":"2026-02-25T00:03:16","date_gmt":"2026-02-25T00:03:16","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/il\/308558\/"},"modified":"2026-02-25T00:03:16","modified_gmt":"2026-02-25T00:03:16","slug":"israel-backs-united-nations-vote-voicing-support-for-ukraine-as-us-abstains","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/il\/308558\/","title":{"rendered":"Israel backs United Nations vote voicing support for Ukraine, as US abstains"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The UN General Assembly voiced support for Ukraine on Tuesday on the fourth anniversary of Russia\u2019s invasion, with the United States among countries abstaining from the vote.<\/p>\n<p>Israel backed the resolution in a rare break from the US, its closest ally in the United Nations.<\/p>\n<p>The assembly passed a resolution saying it was committed to \u201cthe sovereignty, independence, unity and territorial integrity of Ukraine within its internationally recognized borders.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>It passed by a tally of 107 countries in favor, 12 against, and 51 abstentions, which included the United States.<\/p>\n<p>The resolution also called for an immediate and unconditional ceasefire and \u201ccomprehensive, just and lasting peace.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\n\t\t\tGet The Times of Israel&#8217;s Daily Edition<br \/>\n\t\t\tby email and never miss our top stories\n\t\t<\/p>\n<p>\t\t\t\tBy signing up, you agree to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.timesofisrael.com\/terms\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">terms<\/a><\/p>\n<p>The Israeli and American UN missions discussed the upcoming vote beforehand, The Times of Israel learned.<\/p>\n<p>Israel\u2019s UN envoy Danny Danon told The Times of Israel that \u201cthe US and Israel each have their own calculations. We take into account a number of factors, including Russian votes against us at the UN. (Perry Bindelglass\/Israeli Mission to the UN)<\/p>\n<p>The US delegation had pressed for a separate vote on paragraphs involving Ukraine\u2019s territorial integrity and international law but this idea was rejected.<\/p>\n<p>The transition from Joe Biden to Donald Trump in the White House last year has seen firm, unconditional US support for Ukraine cool dramatically.<\/p>\n<p>Trump has brought Russian leader Vladimir Putin back in from the diplomatic cold, and Washington has repeatedly refused to condemn the Russian invasion of 2022.<\/p>\n<p>US deputy ambassador Tammy Bruce said she welcomed the UN appeal for a ceasefire.<\/p>\n<p>But she said the resolution includes \u201clanguage that is likely to distract\u201d from diplomatic efforts to end the war rather than support them. She did not identify these words.<\/p>\n<p>Still, leaders of the G7 global powers, including Trump, on Tuesday reaffirmed their \u201cunwavering support for Ukraine\u201d in a statement on the fourth anniversary of the invasion.<\/p>\n<p>\t<a href=\"https:\/\/static-cdn.toi-media.com\/www\/uploads\/2026\/02\/AP25323670832588.jpg\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-large wp-image-3761576\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/il\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/02\/AP25323670832588-640x400.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"375\"\/><\/a><br \/>\n\t\tTammy Bruce arrives to a Senate Foreign Relations Committee confirmation hearing on her nomination to be the deputy representative to the United Nations, on Capitol Hill in Washington, November 19, 2025. (Julia Demaree Nikhinson\/AP)<\/p>\n<p>A month after Trump returned to power in January 2025, the United States voted against a UN General Assembly resolution calling for a \u201cjust and lasting peace\u201d to end the war.<\/p>\n<p>The US delegation later won Security Council passage of a Russian-backed resolution that called for peace but made no mention of Ukraine\u2019s territorial integrity, frustrating Ukraine\u2019s European allies.<\/p>\n<p>Until then the council had failed to speak out on the war because Russia consistently used its veto power.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDespite peace efforts led by the US and supported by Europe, Russia continues to demonstrate no genuine willingness to stop this aggression,\u201d Ukraine\u2019s Deputy Foreign Minister Mariana Betsa said.<\/p>\n<p>Russia\u2019s deputy ambassador Anna Evstigneeva answered, saying Ukraine should focus on diplomacy to end the war \u201crather than initiating yet another politicized vote.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>A year ago, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.timesofisrael.com\/in-shift-israel-votes-against-un-motion-reaffirming-ukraines-territorial-integrity\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Israel joined <\/a>the US and Russia in voting against a United Nations General Assembly resolution calling to reaffirm Ukraine\u2019s territorial integrity, rejecting a strongly worded condemnation of Russia\u2019s invasion of its neighbor on the war\u2019s third anniversary.<\/p>\n<p>Israel\u2019s vote, likely an overture to Trump, marked the first time the country had voted against Ukraine and with Russia since the war began.<\/p>\n<p>Israel to give Ukraine generators<\/p>\n<p>Foreign Minister Gideon Sa\u2019ar announced Tuesday that Israel will send 117 power generators to Ukraine. The devices are to be deployed in the Kyiv region, his office said in a statement.<\/p>\n<p>The move came following discussions with Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andriy Sybiha \u201con the urgent energy needs,\u201d it said.<\/p>\n<p>\t<a href=\"https:\/\/static-cdn.toi-media.com\/www\/uploads\/2025\/07\/Image-from-iOS-16-scaled-e1753260048401.jpg\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-large wp-image-3604358\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/il\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/02\/Image-from-iOS-16-scaled-e1753260048401-640x400.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"375\"\/><\/a><br \/>\n\t\tForeign Minister Gideon Sa\u2019ar alongside his Ukrainian counterpart Andrii Sybiha in Kyiv, Ukraine, July 23, 2025. (Shlomi Amsalem\/GPO)<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAs communities continue to face attacks on critical infrastructure, Israel remains committed to providing practical, life-saving humanitarian assistance on the ground,\u201d the statement said, referring to Russia\u2019s targeting of energy-linked targets in Ukraine.<\/p>\n<p>Sa\u2019ar also spoke by phone with Rabbi Meir Stambler, chairman of the Federation of Jewish Communities of Ukraine.<\/p>\n<p>Israel has resisted providing weapons to Ukraine \u2014 which requested air defense systems \u2014 saying it needed to avoid jeopardizing diplomatic relations with Moscow.<\/p>\n<p>A second main reason given at the start of the war was the strategic need to maintain freedom of operations in Syria, where Russian forces largely controlled the airspace.<\/p>\n<p>However, this has changed since the fall of the Moscow-allied Assad regime last year.<\/p>\n<p>Sa\u2019ar <a href=\"https:\/\/www.timesofisrael.com\/in-kyiv-saar-announces-israel-ukraine-strategic-dialogue-on-iranian-threat\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">met with<\/a> Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky and Sybiha in Kyiv in July, where they agreed to initiate a bilateral strategic dialogue on the Iranian threat.<\/p>\n<p>That dialogue is expected to take place next month.<\/p>\n<p>Ukraine has taken a series of steps supporting Israeli positions recently.
