Its right half will be bathed in sunlight and its left hidden beneath a cloak of shadow.<\/p>\n<p>To the naked eye, the <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/55-earths-moon-formation-composition-and-orbit.html\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/55-earths-moon-formation-composition-and-orbit.html\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/55-earths-moon-formation-composition-and-orbit.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">lunar disk<\/a> will appear half-lit, with the soft light cast by the 1,000 blue-white stars of the <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/pleiades.html\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/pleiades.html\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/pleiades.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Pleiades<\/a> open cluster shining a little over 10 degrees \u2014 roughly the width of your clenched fist held at arm&#8217;s length \u2014 to its lower right. Look roughly the same distance to the moon&#8217;s lower left to find the &#8220;V&#8221; formation of <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/57-stars-formation-classification-and-constellations.html\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/57-stars-formation-classification-and-constellations.html\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/57-stars-formation-classification-and-constellations.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">stars<\/a> of the Hyades open cluster, which represents the face of the Great Bull in the <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/17101-taurus-constellation.html\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/17101-taurus-constellation.html\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/17101-taurus-constellation.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">constellation Taurus<\/a>, with the red star Aldebaran serving as the red eye of the horned beast.<\/p>\n<p><a id=\"elk-seasonal\"\/><\/p>\n<p id=\"2795ddf9-bbda-4f29-b37b-370456fae71d-2\"><a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/7-jupiter-largest-planet-solar-system.html\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/7-jupiter-largest-planet-solar-system.html\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/7-jupiter-largest-planet-solar-system.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Jupiter<\/a>, meanwhile, will be visible as a steady point of light farther west, among the stars of the <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/16816-gemini-constellation.html\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/16816-gemini-constellation.html\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/16816-gemini-constellation.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">constellation Gemini<\/a>. Below, closer to the horizon, Sirius \u2014 the brightest star in the night sky \u2014 will shine in Canis Major, with Orion positioned between Sirius and the moon.<\/p>\n<p>You may like<\/p>\n<p id=\"c58b73c3-1cbe-4bf0-aeef-17bc43b1d7ea\">The half-lit moon makes a striking naked-eye target tonight, scarred by the dark basaltic plains of lunar maria darkening the silvery beauty of the sunlit portion of the lunar disk. These colossal features \u2014 which appear even more imposing through a pair of 10X50 binoculars \u2014 are essentially scabs that formed billions of years ago when masses of liquid lava flooded the open wounds left by <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/51-asteroids-formation-discovery-and-exploration.html\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/51-asteroids-formation-discovery-and-exploration.html\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/51-asteroids-formation-discovery-and-exploration.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">asteroid<\/a> strikes, before hardening in the extreme space environment.<\/p>\n<p>A 6-inch telescope can reveal more of the moon&#8217;s violent history via the craters that line the jagged line separating night from day, known as the terminator, around the first quarter phase.<\/p>\n<p class=\"vanilla-image-block\" style=\"padding-top:56.24%;\">\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/il\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/02\/pBsREC53psK7eKDHVpzdxX.jpg\" alt=\"A NASA graphic showing a part of the moon's surface around its first quarter phase when its right half is lit by the sun and its left is in shadow. The northmost of the three is Ptolemaeus \u2014 a 95-mile-wide (153-kilometer) walled plain named after the ancient Greek mathematician and astronomer Claudius Ptolemaeus, who created his own <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/54-earth-history-composition-and-atmosphere.html\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/54-earth-history-composition-and-atmosphere.html\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/54-earth-history-composition-and-atmosphere.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Earth<\/a>-centred model of <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/52-the-expanding-universe-from-the-big-bang-to-today.html\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/52-the-expanding-universe-from-the-big-bang-to-today.html\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/52-the-expanding-universe-from-the-big-bang-to-today.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">the universe<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Below are the smaller Alphonsus and Arzachel craters. Sweep your scope further south along the terminator to find yet another trio of fascinating craters \u2014 Purbach, Regiomontanus and Walther, whose broken ridges cast dramatic shadows over their interiors.
