{"id":311715,"date":"2026-02-26T19:02:10","date_gmt":"2026-02-26T19:02:10","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/il\/311715\/"},"modified":"2026-02-26T19:02:10","modified_gmt":"2026-02-26T19:02:10","slug":"blood-test-clock-can-predict-alzheimers-symptoms-before-they-emerge-sciencealert","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/il\/311715\/","title":{"rendered":"Blood Test &#8216;Clock&#8217; Can Predict Alzheimer&#8217;s Symptoms Before They Emerge : ScienceAlert"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Understanding the timeline of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencealert.com\/alzheimer-s-disease\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Alzheimer&#8217;s degeneration<\/a> can improve support for those affected, and researchers have now built a new &#8216;molecular clock&#8217; to predict the onset of symptoms years in advance, using established blood markers.<\/p>\n<p>The time between the first biological signs of  <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencealert.com\/go\/IaO\" class=\"lar_link lar_link_outgoing\" data-linkid=\"73015\" data-postid=\"193261\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_self\">Alzheimer&#8217;s<\/a> appearing and cognitive issues becoming noticeable can be <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencealert.com\/researchers-find-biological-changes-visible-up-to-30-years-before-alzheimer-s-symptoms-appear\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">10\u201330 years<\/a> in most patients, and scientists are keen to understand more about what affects that window.<\/p>\n<p>The molecular clock narrows down when someone might start showing memory problems to a three or four-year window. While it&#8217;s not the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencealert.com\/your-vision-can-predict-dementia-12-years-before-a-diagnosis-research-suggests\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">first predictive tool<\/a> to be discovered, it may be among the simplest and quickest yet.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/il\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/02\/PlasmaChart.jpg\" alt=\"Levels of p-tau217\" width=\"642\" height=\"230\" class=\"wp-image-193264 size-full\"   loading=\"lazy\"\/>Levels of p-tau217 protein were shown to correlate with Alzheimer&#8217;s progression. (Petersen et al., Nat. Med., 2026)<\/p>\n<p>According to the team developing the tool, led by researchers at Washington University in St. Louis (WashU) in the US, this will be useful first for group-level studies and later for individual patients.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Our work shows the feasibility of using blood tests, which are substantially cheaper and more accessible than brain imaging scans or spinal fluid tests, for predicting the onset of Alzheimer&#8217;s symptoms,&#8221; <a href=\"https:\/\/medicine.washu.edu\/news\/blood-test-clocks-predict-when-alzheimers-symptoms-will-start\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">says<\/a> neurologist Suzanne Schindler, from WashU.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;In the near term, these models will accelerate our research and  <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencealert.com\/clinical-trials\" class=\"lar_link lar_link_outgoing\" data-linkid=\"73032\" data-postid=\"193261\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_self\">clinical trials<\/a>. Eventually, the goal is to be able to tell individual patients when they are likely to develop symptoms, which will help them and their doctors to develop a plan to prevent or slow symptoms.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencealert.com\/newsletter?utm_source=promo_generic_health\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/il\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/Generic-Health-Promo-Final-642x273.jpg\" alt=\"Subscribe to ScienceAlert's free fact-checked newsletter\" width=\"642\" height=\"273\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-182810 size-medium\"   loading=\"lazy\"\/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The researchers used an existing blood test that measures levels of the p-tau217 protein. This protein can already be used to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencealert.com\/new-fastball-test-could-assess-alzheimers-risk-in-just-3-minutes\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">diagnos<\/a>e<a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencealert.com\/new-fastball-test-could-assess-alzheimers-risk-in-just-3-minutes\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\"> Alzheimer&#8217;s<\/a>, but with some additional mathematical modeling, the researchers found it could also predict whether someone is likely to develop symptoms and when.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.1002\/alz.14073\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Previous studies<\/a> have shown that p-tau217 in the blood is an indicator of tau and amyloid-beta protein build-up in the brain \u2013 abnormalities that are strongly associated with Alzheimer&#8217;s disease and the damage it does to neurons.<\/p>\n<p>The researchers analyzed existing blood test data from 603 people collected over several years to develop their Alzheimer&#8217;s clock test. By looking at p-tau217 levels in the samples and when <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencealert.com\/memory-loss-in-alzheimers-linked-to-problems-with-the-brains-replay-mode\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">cognitive issues<\/a> first appeared, the team was able to develop formulas to link the two events.<\/p>\n<p>Older people tended to have a shorter window between the two points, the researchers observed, perhaps indicating that younger brains are better able to resist neurodegeneration and keep it at bay for longer, once it&#8217;s begun.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Amyloid and tau levels are similar to tree rings,&#8221; <a href=\"https:\/\/medicine.washu.edu\/news\/blood-test-clocks-predict-when-alzheimers-symptoms-will-start\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">says<\/a> lead author and neurologist Kellen Petersen, from WashU. &#8220;If we know how many rings a tree has, we know how many years old it is.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;It turns out that amyloid and tau also accumulate in a consistent pattern and the age they become positive strongly predicts when someone is going to develop Alzheimer&#8217;s symptoms.
