{"id":311988,"date":"2026-02-26T22:45:09","date_gmt":"2026-02-26T22:45:09","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/il\/311988\/"},"modified":"2026-02-26T22:45:09","modified_gmt":"2026-02-26T22:45:09","slug":"berlinale-in-crisis-as-israel-gaza-row-engulfs-director-tricia-tuttle","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/il\/311988\/","title":{"rendered":"Berlinale in Crisis as Israel-Gaza Row Engulfs Director Tricia Tuttle"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\tThe uproar engulfing the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hollywoodreporter.com\/t\/berlinale\/\" id=\"auto-tag_berlinale_1\" data-tag=\"berlinale\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Berlinale<\/a> and its director, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hollywoodreporter.com\/t\/tricia-tuttle\/\" id=\"auto-tag_tricia-tuttle_1\" data-tag=\"tricia-tuttle\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Tricia Tuttle<\/a>, now threatens to inflict lasting damage on one of the world\u2019s essential showcases for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hollywoodreporter.com\/t\/international\/\" id=\"auto-tag_international_1\" data-tag=\"international\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">international<\/a> independent cinema.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\tThe flashpoint, as is so often the case in cultural institutions today, is Israel-Gaza. And the arguments, as is increasingly the norm, are unfolding inside mutually exclusive media bubbles, each fortified by its own facts, its own outrage and little appetite for exchange.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\tAt the center stands the Berlinale, one of the industry\u2019s key platforms  \u2014 alongside Cannes, Venice and Toronto \u2014 and Tuttle, who took over in 2024 after a successful term running the London Film Festival and who has tried to defend Berlin as a space for free expression and pluralistic debate.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\tIt has not shielded her.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\tOn Thursday, Tuttle was called in for a special meeting of the Berlinale\u2019s supervisory board, called by German culture minister Wolfram Weimer, with the expectation among many in the media that she would be fired <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hollywoodreporter.com\/movies\/movie-news\/backlash-after-pro-palestine-comments-at-berlin-awards-1236512628\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">after controversy over pro-Palestinian speeches<\/a> at Saturday\u2019s closing gala, one of which criticized Germany as \u201cpartners in the genocide.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\tGerman conservative tabloid Bild, citing unnamed inside sources, claimed Weimer had Tuttle in his sights because of that statement, made by Syrian-Palestinian director Abdallah al-Khatib, who won the best first feature award for his drama Chronicles From the Siege. The paper also pointed to a photograph taken earlier in the week showing Tuttle with al-Khatib\u2019s team, several wearing keffiyehs and one holding a Palestinian flag. The standard festival photo-op now recast as evidence.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\tThe meeting <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hollywoodreporter.com\/movies\/movie-news\/german-culture-ministry-to-decide-on-berlinale-boss-1236515996\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">ended without a decision<\/a>. In a brief statement, the German Culture Ministry \u2014 the Berlinale\u2019s principal public funder \u2014 said only that discussions \u201cregarding the direction of the Berlinale\u201d would continue.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\tTuttle\u2019s future remains uncertain. She could still be removed. She could resign, leaving the ministry to manage the fallout. Or she could remain, buoyed by open letters of support from Berlinale staff and from hundreds of filmmakers around the world. If she goes, good luck finding anyone willing to take her place.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\t\u201cWho would want to run the festival, knowing about the restrictions and also about the watchful eyes that would see any misstep lead to immediate execution?\u201d German director Tom Tykwer said in a Feb. 25 television interview. \u201cThat\u2019s not the idea of free art and a free country.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\tIf its loudest critics are to be believed, the Berlinale is simultaneously a platform for antisemitic, anti-Israel propaganda and an instrument of the pro-Israel German state that censors pro-Palestinian voices. Both narratives are absurd and have little relation to what actually happened at this year\u2019s festival.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\tThe accusations of antisemitism hinge largely on al-Khatib\u2019s speech and the now-infamous photograph. Yet before the awards, a very different charge dominated progressive social media: that the Berlinale was silencing artists critical of Israel.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\tShort clips from press conferences \u2014 including <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hollywoodreporter.com\/movies\/movie-news\/berlinale-2026-gets-heated-wim-wenders-jury-politics-1236503389\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">jury president Wim Wenders saying<\/a>, \u201cwe have to stay out of politics\u201d \u2014 fueled online outrage. A Feb. 17 open letter <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hollywoodreporter.com\/movies\/movie-news\/tilda-swinton-javier-bardem-letter-gaza-backlash-berlinale-1236507959\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">signed by 81 Berlinale alumni<\/a>, among them <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hollywoodreporter.com\/t\/tilda-swinton\/\" id=\"auto-tag_tilda-swinton_1\" data-tag=\"tilda-swinton\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Tilda Swinton<\/a>, Javier Bardem, Mark Ruffalo, and Brian Cox, accused the festival of \u201ccensoring artists who oppose Israel\u2019s ongoing genocide against Palestinians in Gaza and the German state\u2019s key role in enabling it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\tHow precisely artists were being censored was never clearly articulated. In practice, the festival stage proved anything but silent. Two days after Wenders\u2019 statement about staying out of politics, Finnish director Hanna Bergholm <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hollywoodreporter.com\/movies\/movie-news\/rupert-grint-uk-fascism-berlin-politics-film-jk-rowling-1236505597\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">wore a watermelon pin in support of Palestine<\/a> at the press conference for her film Nightborn and referenced \u201cthe genocide\u201d in Gaza. During the awards ceremony, multiple winners \u2014 including Marie-Rose Osta, whose Someday a Child won the Golden Bear for best short film, screenwriter Genevi\u00e8ve Dulude-de Celles (Nina Roza), and Silver Bear Grand Jury Prize winner Emin Alper (Salvation) \u2014 invoked Gaza and called to \u201cfree Palestine.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\tAnyone accusing the Berlinale of anti-Israeli bias conveniently ignored the Feb. 17 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hollywoodreporter.com\/movies\/movie-news\/berlinale-sees-launch-of-german-israeli-production-fund-1236508542\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">launch, in Berlin,<\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hollywoodreporter.com\/movies\/movie-news\/berlinale-sees-launch-of-german-israeli-production-fund-1236508542\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\"> <\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hollywoodreporter.com\/movies\/movie-news\/berlinale-sees-launch-of-german-israeli-production-fund-1236508542\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">of the FutureNarrative Fund<\/a>, a new German-Israeli co-production initiative attended by major public funders, broadcasters, and studios. And the Feb. 20 festival screening of A Letter to David \u2013 The Complete Version, Israeli director Tom Shoval\u2019s documentary tribute to actor David Cunio, taken hostage by Hamas on Oct. 7 and released last November. An earlier version of the film premiered at the Berlinale last year, Tuttle\u2019s first edition in charge.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\tShoval has publicly backed Tuttle, saying she had done an \u201cextraordinary job under impossible conditions.\u201d So have more than 700 filmmakers from across Europe and the world, who have put their names to an open letter supporting her and calling for \u201cartistic freedom and institutional independence\u201d at the festival. Among the signatories are Sean Baker, Todd Haynes, Kleber Mendon\u00e7a Filho, Ari Folman, Nancy Spielberg and (again) Tilda Swinton.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\tSpeaking to The Hollywood Reporter, Shoval worried the polemics dominating this year\u2019s Berlinale risk hollowing out the very purpose of a film festival.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\t\u201cYou go to a festival to see film, to see art \u2014 you\u2019re not going to debate about politics,\u201d he said. \u201cOf course, films are political. Art is political. But to reduce everything to that is to create a perverse perspective.\u201d The danger, he argued, is that the conversation consumes the cinema itself: \u201cThe Berlin Film Festival just happened, and you don\u2019t talk about the films. You talk only about the debates.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\tThroughout the festival, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hollywoodreporter.com\/movies\/movie-news\/2026-berlinal-censorship-claims-backlash-politics-tricia-tuttle-1236508678\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Tuttle rejected allegations of censorship <\/a>as \u201crooted in misinformation\u201d and \u201cincredibly damaging.\u201d At the awards ceremony, she acknowledged the charged atmosphere, but argued that the heated debate was proof that \u201cthe Berlinale is doing its job, and it\u2019s cinema doing its job.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\tTuttle maintains that the Berlinale must remain a pluralistic space \u2014 one that allows artists to speak, audiences to listen, and disagreement to unfold without political oversight or censure. Her critics, from opposite ends of the spectrum, see bias where she sees balance.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\tWhat happens next will determine more than one director\u2019s tenure.
