Lee \/ PHANGS-HST Team.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/simbad.cds.unistra.fr\/simbad\/sim-id?Ident=NGC+2775\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">NGC 2775<\/a> is located approximately 67 million light-years away in the northern constellation of Cancer.<\/p>\n<p>The galaxy was <a href=\"https:\/\/science.nasa.gov\/mission\/hubble\/science\/explore-the-night-sky\/hubble-caldwell-catalog\/caldwell-48\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">discovered<\/a> on December 19, 1783 by the German-born British astronomer William Herschel.<\/p>\n<p>It belongs to the Antilia-Hydra Cloud of galaxies and is the main member of a small group of galaxies called the NGC 2775 group.<\/p>\n<p>Also known as Caldwell 48, LEDA 25861 or UGC 4820, NGC 2275 has a diameter of 80,000 light-years.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNGC 2775 sports a smooth, featureless center that is devoid of gas, resembling an elliptical galaxy,\u201d the Hubble astronomers said in a statement.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt also has a dusty ring with patchy star clusters, like a spiral galaxy. Which is it, then: spiral or elliptical \u2014 or neither?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBecause we can only view NGC 2775 from one angle, it\u2019s difficult to say for sure.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSome researchers have classified NGC 2775 as a spiral galaxy because of its feathery ring of stars and dust, while others have classified it as a lenticular galaxy.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cLenticular galaxies have features common to both spiral and elliptical galaxies.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s not yet known exactly how lenticular galaxies come to be, and they might form in a variety of ways.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cLenticular galaxies might be spiral galaxies that have merged with other galaxies, or that have mostly run out of star-forming gas and lost their prominent spiral arms.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey also might have started out more similar to elliptical galaxies, then collected gas into a disk around them.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>According to the astronomers, NGC 2775 has likely merged with other galaxies in the past.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cInvisible in this Hubble image, NGC 2775 has a tail of hydrogen gas that stretches almost 100,000 light-years around the galaxy,\u201d the researchers said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis faint tail could be the remnant of one or more galaxies that wandered too close to NGC 2775 before being stretched apart and absorbed.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf NGC 2775 merged with other galaxies in the past, it could explain the galaxy\u2019s strange appearance today.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cA Hubble image of NGC 2775 was <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sci.news\/astronomy\/hubble-flocculent-spiral-galaxy-ngc-2775-08580.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">previously released<\/a> in 2020,\u201d they said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe new version adds observations of a specific wavelength of red light that is emitted by clouds of hydrogen gas surrounding massive young stars.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"NGC 2775\u2019s large, yellowish, central bulge is filled with old stars, encircled by tightly wound spiral arms decorated&hellip;\n","protected":false},"author":2,"featured_media":31208,"comment_status":"","ping_status":"","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"footnotes":""},"categories":[7],"tags":[26625,26626,6797,1745,26627,85,46,26628,3442,26629,141,26630],"class_list":{"0":"post-31207","1":"post","2":"type-post","3":"status-publish","4":"format-standard","5":"has-post-thumbnail","7":"category-science","8":"tag-caldwell-48","9":"tag-elliptical-galaxy","10":"tag-esa","11":"tag-galaxy","12":"tag-hubble","13":"tag-il","14":"tag-israel","15":"tag-lenticular-galaxy","16":"tag-nasa","17":"tag-ngc-2775","18":"tag-science","19":"tag-spiral-galaxy"},"_links":{"self":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/il\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/31207","targetHints":{"allow":["GET"]}}],"collection":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/il\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts"}],"about":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/il\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/types\/post"}],"author":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/il\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/users\/2"}],"replies":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/il\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/comments?post=31207"}],"version-history":[{"count":0,"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/il\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/31207\/revisions"}],"wp:featuredmedia":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/il\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media\/31208"}],"wp:attachment":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/il\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media?parent=31207"}],"wp:term":[{"taxonomy":"category","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/il\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/categories?post=31207"},{"taxonomy":"post_tag","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/il\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/tags?post=31207"}],"curies":[{"name":"wp","href":"https:\/\/api.w.org\/{rel}","templated":true}]}}
