It may just get you a job during the AI jobs apocalypse, says Sam Altman"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>While executives increasingly turn to AI to reduce headcount, the same CEOs perpetuating the <a aria-label=\"Go to https:\/\/fortune.com\/2026\/02\/25\/andrew-yang-former-presidential-candidate-artifical-intelligence-job-apocalypse-white-collar-cuts-prediction-universal-basic-income\/\" href=\"https:\/\/fortune.com\/2026\/02\/25\/andrew-yang-former-presidential-candidate-artifical-intelligence-job-apocalypse-white-collar-cuts-prediction-universal-basic-income\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">AI jobs apocalypse<\/a> argue \u201ctaste\u201d could be a skill that gets you hired\u2014and keeps your job secure.<\/p>\n<p>A day before announcing OpenAI\u2019s newest <a aria-label=\"Go to https:\/\/x.com\/sama\/status\/2027386252555919386\" href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/sama\/status\/2027386252555919386\" rel=\"nofollow\">$110 billion funding round<\/a>, OpenAI CEO Sam Altman<a aria-label=\"Go to https:\/\/x.com\/sama\/status\/2027087700214591913\" href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/sama\/status\/2027087700214591913\" rel=\"nofollow\"> took to X<\/a> to comment on how even non-technical people can contribute to the development of AI, or at least at his company. One of the best ways for these non-technical candidates to get their foot in the door is through research recruiting, Altman said.<\/p>\n<p>His advice? Leverage the one thing AI has so far struggled to replicate: human judgement.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe believe the best research teams are built through context, taste and a real feel for where the field is headed next,\u201d he said.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Recruiting may be an especially good fit for candidates with \u201ctaste,\u201d Altman implied, because their responsibilities at OpenAI include, \u201cfinding people who will move the frontier forward, not just filling roles.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Altman is the latest high profile exec pointing to \u201ctaste\u201d as a potential advantage <a aria-label=\"Go to https:\/\/fortune.com\/2026\/02\/25\/jamie-dimon-society-prepare-ai-job-displacement\/\" href=\"https:\/\/fortune.com\/2026\/02\/25\/jamie-dimon-society-prepare-ai-job-displacement\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">for job seekers<\/a> as well as the growing number of employees <a aria-label=\"Go to https:\/\/fortune.com\/2026\/02\/26\/computer-science-class-of-2026-graduates-job-prospects-high-salaries-gen-z-career-advice-new-report\/\" href=\"https:\/\/fortune.com\/2026\/02\/26\/computer-science-class-of-2026-graduates-job-prospects-high-salaries-gen-z-career-advice-new-report\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">dealing with AI job anxiety<\/a>. OpenAI president Greg Brockman said the same last week. \u201cTaste is a new core skill,\u201d he wrote in a post on <a aria-label=\"Go to https:\/\/x.com\/gdb\/status\/2023481258639286401\" href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/gdb\/status\/2023481258639286401\" rel=\"nofollow\">X<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Other tech titans, including Y-Combinator cofounder Paul Graham, have also recently echoed Altman\u2019s thoughts that \u201ctaste\u201d is going to be the next sought after skill.<\/p>\n<p>Graham, known for his long essays on startups, economics, and the tech industry, was one of the first to comment on the importance of taste in a <a aria-label=\"Go to https:\/\/paulgraham.com\/taste.html\" href=\"https:\/\/paulgraham.com\/taste.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">2002 essay<\/a> in which he claimed \u201ctaste\u201d is not objective and that \u201cwe need good taste to make good things.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In a <a aria-label=\"Go to https:\/\/x.com\/paulg\/status\/2022604692178522562\" href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/paulg\/status\/2022604692178522562\" rel=\"nofollow\">post<\/a> on <a aria-label=\"Go to https:\/\/fortune.com\/company\/twitter\/\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/fortune.com\/company\/twitter\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">X<\/a> earlier this month, Graham expanded on his thoughts from two decades ago: \u201cIn the AI age, taste will become even more important. When anyone can make anything, the big differentiator is what you choose to make,\u201d he predicted.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><a aria-label=\"Go to https:\/\/fortune.com\/company\/cloudfare\/\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/fortune.com\/company\/cloudfare\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Cloudflare<\/a> chief technology officer Dane Knecht <a aria-label=\"Go to https:\/\/x.com\/dok2001\/status\/2022879827628560522\" href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/dok2001\/status\/2022879827628560522\" rel=\"nofollow\">wrote<\/a> in reply to Graham\u2019s post that he agreed with Graham, linking back to a post he made earlier this year in which he claimed taste will be the differentiator in engineering in 2026.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBuilding is easy now. Knowing what to build, and what not to, is the hard part,\u201d Knecht added.<\/p>\n<p>But not everyone agrees that humans have the upper hand when it comes to judgement or taste. Matt Schumer, the co-founder and CEO of OthersideAI, wrote in his <a aria-label=\"Go to https:\/\/fortune.com\/2026\/02\/11\/something-big-is-happening-ai-february-2020-moment-matt-shumer\/\" href=\"https:\/\/fortune.com\/2026\/02\/11\/something-big-is-happening-ai-february-2020-moment-matt-shumer\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">viral essay<\/a> on the future of AI earlier this month that OpenAI\u2019s GPT-5.3 Codex model felt, at least to him, capable of \u201csomething that felt, for the first time, like judgment. Like taste\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI don\u2019t see why \u201ctaste\u201d and direction are uniquely human, like many people say. If an AI can train on it, it can learn it,\u201d Schumer <a aria-label=\"Go to https:\/\/x.com\/mattshumer_\/status\/2024355728257950151\" href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/mattshumer_\/status\/2024355728257950151\" rel=\"nofollow\">added<\/a> in a later post on X.<\/p>\n<p>Still, the conversation about \u201ctaste\u201d is salient at a time when <a aria-label=\"Go to https:\/\/fortune.com\/2026\/01\/23\/ai-anxiety-widespread-panic-attack-microsoft-researcher-dario-amodei\/\" href=\"https:\/\/fortune.com\/2026\/01\/23\/ai-anxiety-widespread-panic-attack-microsoft-researcher-dario-amodei\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">anxiety about the future of AI<\/a>, and what it could mean for the job market, is front of mind for many workers.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>On Thursday, <a aria-label=\"Go to https:\/\/fortune.com\/company\/square\/\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/fortune.com\/company\/square\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Block<\/a> CEO Jack Dorsey said that the company was laying off 4,000 of its more than 10,000 workers, partly because of AI.
