This gives the microbes time to alter the flour to make it healthier.\u201d <\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.huffingtonpost.co.uk\/entry\/fibre-reduced-heart-disease-dementia-cancer-risk_uk_6842ae2ae4b043146daa3f82\" role=\"link\" class=\" js-entry-link cet-internal-link\" data-vars-item-name=\"Fibre has been linked to decreased\" data-vars-item-type=\"text\" data-vars-unit-name=\"699dd0cde4b01941c73c1cc0\" data-vars-unit-type=\"buzz_body\" data-vars-target-content-id=\"6842ae2ae4b043146daa3f82\" data-vars-target-content-type=\"buzz\" data-vars-type=\"web_internal_link\" data-vars-subunit-name=\"article_body\" data-vars-subunit-type=\"component\" data-vars-position-in-subunit=\"3\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Fibre has been linked to decreased<\/a> heart disease, cancer, and even dementia risk, though 90% of us aren\u2019t getting the required 30g a day.<\/p>\n<p>And true sourdough <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bhf.org.uk\/informationsupport\/heart-matters-magazine\/nutrition\/ask-the-expert\/sourdough-bread-healthy\" target=\"_blank\" role=\"link\" class=\" js-entry-link cet-external-link\" data-vars-item-name=\"has a lower glycemic index\" data-vars-item-type=\"text\" data-vars-unit-name=\"699dd0cde4b01941c73c1cc0\" data-vars-unit-type=\"buzz_body\" data-vars-target-content-id=\"https:\/\/www.bhf.org.uk\/informationsupport\/heart-matters-magazine\/nutrition\/ask-the-expert\/sourdough-bread-healthy\" data-vars-target-content-type=\"url\" data-vars-type=\"web_external_link\" data-vars-subunit-name=\"article_body\" data-vars-subunit-type=\"component\" data-vars-position-in-subunit=\"4\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">has a lower glycemic index<\/a> than those made with commercial yeast, which may be a better choice for those with diabetes.<\/p>\n<p>But, Travers said, there\u2019s a caveat: \u201cBeware supermarket and non-artisan sourdoughs as these aren\u2019t usually made [the traditional] way.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey may have a small amount of starter, but they generally have yeast added to speed the process up, which means you don\u2019t get the benefits.\u201d <\/p>\n<p>Some doctors <a href=\"https:\/\/www.huffingtonpost.co.uk\/entry\/sourdough-vs-sourdough-health-benefits_uk_690deee1e4b0d142901ea0c2\" role=\"link\" class=\" js-entry-link cet-internal-link\" data-vars-item-name=\"have expressed concern\" data-vars-item-type=\"text\" data-vars-unit-name=\"699dd0cde4b01941c73c1cc0\" data-vars-unit-type=\"buzz_body\" data-vars-target-content-id=\"690deee1e4b0d142901ea0c2\" data-vars-target-content-type=\"buzz\" data-vars-type=\"web_internal_link\" data-vars-subunit-name=\"article_body\" data-vars-subunit-type=\"component\" data-vars-position-in-subunit=\"5\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">have expressed concern<\/a> about \u201csourfauxs,\u201d or bread which is labelled sourdough in supermarkets but which does not rely on a traditional starter to rise. Travers said, \u201cFibre is really important, but wholegrain is best because the grain is left fairly intact, which isn\u2019t the case with the 50\/50 type breads or brown breads.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSo yes, I would say that wholegrain is probably always healthier than white (except if you are anaemic and trying to increase iron. In this case, you would want white rather than brown or wholegrain).\u201d<\/p>\n<p>But, she added, the case is \u201cquite nuanced\u201d as, \u201cIt\u2019s a difficult toss-up between white sourdough and wholemeal seeded because the latter is higher in fibre, but the former might have less of an effect on blood sugar and may be beneficial to gut health, so [seeded wholemeal bread, wholemeal bread, and white sourdough] are potentially equal.\u201d <\/p>\n<p>The healthiest breads, ranked by a dietitian<\/p>\n<p>Tavers ranked the healthiest breads in this order, from most to least healthy:<\/p>\n<p>Wholemeal seeded sourdough with different types of grains like spelt and rye (\u201clots of different fibres\u201d),Wholemeal sourdough,Seeded wholemeal bread, wholemeal bread, and white sourdough,Supermarket seeded multigrain (\u201cactually not usually wholegrain despite having different types [of grain]\u201d),Brown, non-sourdough bread,50\/50 bread,White, non-sourdough bread.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"Dietary advice provided by registered dietitian Jo Travers, also known as The London Nutritionist.
