Avatar: Fire and Ash has hit a major box office milestone, but it is still being scorched by the other two movies in the franchise.

The Avatar: Fire and Ash release kicked off on December 19, 2025, with the second-biggest debut of the James Cameron sci-fi trilogy. It quickly climbed past the billion-dollar mark worldwide and currently stands as the 16th highest-grossing movie of all time (behind 2022’s Top Gun: Maverick, which earned $1.496 billion worldwide).

Per The Numbers, Avatar: Fire and Ash hit a cumulative total of $400.3 million at the domestic box office on Friday. This makes it the 55th movie in history to ever pass the huge $400 million domestic milestone. However, it took 71 days for it to squeak past that number, which is significantly slower than both of its predecessors.

The original 2009 movie crossed the $400 million milestone on the 23rd day of its release, while its more fleet-footed sequel, 2022’s The Way of Water, did so in just 16 days. Both of the original Avatar movies ultimately grossed more than $2 billion worldwide and stand as the first and third highest-grossing movies of all time, respectively.

Considering what a massive hit 2026’s Avatar: Fire and Ash is, it doesn’t necessarily need to be an all-time record-breaker at the level of the previous two movies in order to be considered a success. However, if the franchise is hit with further diminishing returns, it could quickly devolve into a string of extraordinary flops thanks to the movies’ huge budgets.

Fire and Ash reportedly cost roughly $400 million. Because blockbuster movies often need to earn back two and a half times their budgets in theaters, this could place the movie’s estimated break-even point as high as $1 billion. While the movie has surpassed that number and is nearing the $1.5 billion mark as its theatrical run slows down, a similarly priced sequel might not perform as well.

If the potential Avatar 4 falls behind Avatar: Fire and Ash to the same degree that the new movie has fallen behind The Way of Water, it would only end up earning roughly $970 million, which could ultimately see it lose money in theaters. While it could make up the deficit on VOD and physical media, a fifth installment might not be so lucky if box office totals continue to drop.
