Artist Sayre Gomez<\/a> has built a scale model of Los Angeles\u2019 notorious Oceanwide Plaza<\/a>\u00a0tower complex, recently on display in the artist’s Precious Moments<\/a> exhibition at the David Kordansky Gallery<\/a>. The development became known in early 2024 when graffiti art appeared<\/a> on its three skyscrapers.<\/p>\n

Gomez\u2019s 9-foot hyperrealistic scale model of the megadevelopment is his most ambitious and complex sculpture to date, examining how a single building complex can represent the failures of capitalism, government, and speculative real estate. The three CallisonRTKL<\/a>-designed\u00a0towers were abandoned \u2014 nearly completed but still unfinished \u2014 in 2019 after Chinese investors Oceanwide Holdings Co.\u00a0ran out of money for the scheme.<\/p>\n

Late last month, we covered news that a prospective buyer had been found<\/a> for the ensemble and that their first priority would be to remove the graffiti art on the towers.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cYou can read a million books about the end of capitalism, but then you see that, and it\u2019s like, oh they\u2019re right,\u201d Gomez recently told The New York Times<\/a> about the artwork and building. \u201cA billion dollars just wasted, six years later just sitting there. It\u2019s kind of hard-core.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s hilarious. It\u2019s profound and funny and sad and just like, so crazy,\u201d Gomez told LA’s KCRW<\/a>. \u201cEverything to me is kind of art\u2026 the building itself is art already, but it can\u2019t go in a gallery. So I\u2019m like, how do I problem-solve this? Oh, I\u2019ll just make it smaller.\u201d<\/p>\n
