RELATED: Hegseth says US submarine sank Iranian warship in international waters<\/a><\/p>\n The war has killed more than 1,000 people in Iran, more than 70 in Lebanon and around a dozen in Israel, according to officials in those countries.\u00a0<\/p>\n It has disrupted the supply of the world\u2019s oil and gas, snarled international shipping and stranded hundreds of thousands of travelers in the Middle East.<\/p>\n Here\u2019s the latest from Thursday.\u00a0<\/p>\n US closes its embassy in Kuwait <\/p>\n 2:20 p.m. ET: The Associated Press reported that it\u2019s the second diplomatic mission to fully suspend operations since the start of the Iran war.<\/p>\n “While there have been no reported injuries to U.S. personnel, the safety of Americans abroad remains the highest priority of the U.S. Department of State,” it said in a statement provided by the AP about the status of the embassy in Kuwait City.<\/p>\n Shortly before the announcement, the department said that Secretary of State Marco Rubio had called the Kuwaiti foreign minister to express condolences for the deaths of at least two Kuwaiti troops in Iranian retaliatory strikes.<\/p>\n Although numerous U.S. embassies and consulates in the Middle East have closed to the public since the war began, only the consulate in Karachi, Pakistan, has suspended operations.<\/p>\n Stocks are falling sharply on Wall Street <\/p>\n 1:55 p.m. ET: According to the Associated Press, as oil prices rose further because of the war with Iran, the Dow dropped 1,052 points, or 2.2%, the S&P 500 sank 1.4% coming off a frenetic start to the week, and the Nasdaq composite fell 1.3%.<\/p>\n The AP noted that airlines and stocks of smaller U.S. companies tumbled to some of the sharpest losses. Oil prices rallied following the latest escalations in the war. Treasury yields also jumped with worries that higher inflation could keep the Federal Reserve from cutting interest rates.<\/p>\n Still, the U.S. stock market has a history of bouncing back relatively quickly following conflicts in the Middle East and elsewhere. That has many professional investors suggesting patience and riding through the market\u2019s swings.<\/p>\n US Embassy in Pakistan issues a security alert ahead of possible protests on Friday <\/p>\n 12:05 p.m. ET: According to the Associated Press, the security alert did not explain the cause of the possible demonstrations, but comes days after Pakistani protesters supportive of the Iranian government attempted to storm a U.S. consulate, leading to violent clashes in Karachi and elsewhere that left 22 people dead. The embassy\u2019s warning Thursday restricts the movement of its personnel nationwide.<\/p>\n Trump wants to be involved in picking the next Iranian leader <\/p>\n 11:55 a.m. ET: President Donald Trump, in an interview with the news outlet Axios, said he wants to be involved in selection of Iran\u2019s next leader and called Ayatollah Ali Khamenei\u2019s son an “unacceptable” potential pick, according to the Associated Press.\u00a0<\/p>\n “Khamenei\u2019s son is unacceptable to me,” Trump said of Mojtaba Khamenei, the 56-year-old son of the supreme leader killed on the first day of the war. Trump added, “We want someone that will bring harmony and peace to Iran.”<\/p>\n The AP noted that Trump also criticized Khamenei\u2019s son, who is believed to be under consideration to serve as the next supreme leader, as “a light weight.\u2019<\/p>\n “I have to be involved in the appointment, like with Delcy in Venezuela,” said Trump, referring to the acting president in the South American country.<\/p>\n Delcy Rodriguez took power in January after Trump ordered a U.S. military operation to capture Nicol\u00e1s Maduro and whisk him to the U.S. to face federal drug conspiracy charges, the AP reported.\u00a0<\/p>\n Around 20,000 Americans have left the Middle East, State Department says <\/p>\n 11:15 a.m. ET: The Associated Press reported that around 20,000 Americans left the Middle East, and nearly all of them made their own way out of the region without government assistance, according to the State Department.<\/p>\n The department said it is arranging charter flights for private citizens who want to leave. The first departed Wednesday and several more were expected Thursday, although officials did not say where they would depart.<\/p>\n Earlier, the department asked Americans in Bahrain, Israel, Kuwait, Qatar, Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates to fill out an online form for information about the flights.<\/p>\n Officials said they have responded to requests for information from more than 10,000 Americans in the region but did not say how many want to leave. Americans seeking help were urged to contact an emergency task force at +1-202-501-4444<\/a>.<\/p>\n Iran awaits announcement of a new leader <\/p>\n 10:30 a.m. ET: The Associated Press reported that some disagreements are starting to come to light from private discussions over who will be Iran\u2019s next supreme leader.<\/p>\n Rumors have circulated around the possibility of Mojtaba Khamenei succeeding his father as supreme leader as he\u2019s close with the all-powerful Revolutionary Guards.<\/p>\n A member of parliament and firebrand cleric, Hamid Rasaee, wrote Thursday that the killed supreme leader\u2019s son was “an outstanding seminarian” as well as a trusted advisor to his father and an “overseer of many of the country\u2019s affairs.” He also called Khamenei an ayatollah, a rank he may not possess. Jeffrey O’Brien and Robert Marzan.<\/p>\n O\u2019Brien, a resident of Waukee, Iowa, was commissioned into the Army Reserve as a Signal Corps Officer in 2012. He deployed to Kuwait in 2019.<\/p>\n The Pentagon said Chief Warrant Officer 3 Marzan, 54, of Sacramento was at the scene when a drone strike hit the command center in Kuwait and is “believed to be the individual who perished at the scene,” according to the statement.
