IDF says it has begun striking Hezbollah infrastructure in the Dahiyeh area in Beirut<\/p>\n

Roads out of the suburbs \u200bwere \u200cclogged \u2060as people \u200bfled \u2060by car and on foot after evacuation demand<\/p>\n

BEIRUT: Israel bombed the southern suburbs of Beirut late on Thursday, hours after ordering residents\u00a0of the large, densely-populated area to evacuate.<\/p>\n

The Israeli military said it had begun striking infrastructure belonging to Hezbollah in\u00a0Dahiyeh neighborhood.<\/p>\n

Lebanese state media said a strike hit the area\u00a0while AFPTV footage showed an explosion and a plume of smoke rising from the site.<\/p>\n

The evacuation order for the\u00a0Hezbollah-controlled southern suburbs\u00a0sparked panic as people fled a swathe of the Lebanese capital on the fourth day of full-scale hostilities between the Iran-backed group and Israel.<\/p>\n

An Israeli military spokesperson, in a post on \u200cX, ordered residents \u200cof the southern suburbs to \u200bmove \u200ceast \u2060and \u200bnorth, posting a \u2060map showing four sprawling districts of the capital he said they must leave, part of the area is adjacent to Beirut airport.<\/p>\n

\u201cSave your lives, evacuate your homes immediately,\u201d Israeli military spokesperson Avichay Adraee posted, saying that any movement southwards may endanger their lives.<\/p>\n

Roads out of the \u2060suburbs were clogged as people fled by \u200ccar and on foot, television \u200cfootage showed. Gunfire was heard in \u200bthe southern suburbs, warning residents \u200cto leave.<\/p>\n

Later on Thursday, the Israeli military warned residents of three villages in Lebanon\u2019s eastern Bekaa region to evacuate immediately.<\/p>\n

\u201cUrgent warning to the residents of the Bekaa region, specifically the residents of the villages and towns of Douris, Brital, and Majdaloun: Hezbollah\u2019s activities in the area are forcing the IDF (Israeli military) to operate forcefully against it in order to target its military infrastructure,\u201d Adraee said in another post on X.<\/p>\n

\u201cTo ensure your safety, we urge you to evacuate the area immediately and head west.\u201d<\/p>\n

Lebanon was pulled into the war in \u200cthe Middle East on Monday, when Hezbollah opened fire, sparking intensified Israeli airstrikes largely focused on the southern suburbs, southern Lebanon and eastern Lebanon.<\/p>\n

On Wednesday, the Israeli military ordered residents to \u200cleave an area of southern Lebanon amounting to about 8 percent of its territory.<\/p>\n

Israeli bombardment \u2060and warnings \u2060have already forced tens of thousands of Lebanese to flee homes in the southern suburbs and the south this week.<\/p>\n

The Lebanese health ministry said 123\u00a0people have been killed. There have been no reports of fatalities in Israel as a result of Hezbollah attacks.<\/p>\n

Beirut\u2019s predominantly Shiite Muslim southern suburbs are among the capital\u2019s most densely populated areas. The area was pounded by Israeli airstrikes during a war with Hezbollah in 2024, \u200band during a previous \u200bwar with Israel in 2006.<\/p>\n

Human Rights Watch said on Thursday that the Israeli military\u2019s call for residents of vast areas of southern Lebanon to evacuate raised \u201cserious risks of violations of the laws of war.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cCalling on everyone who lives south of the Litani (River) to evacuate immediately raises serious legal and humanitarian red flags and fears for the safety of civilians,\u201d said Ramzi Kaiss, Lebanon researcher at Human Rights Watch.<\/p>\n

\u201cHow are older people, the sick and people with disabilities going to be able to evacuate immediately? And how will their safety be guaranteed as they leave?\u201d he said in a statement from the rights group.<\/p>\n

HRW said \u201cthe sweeping nature\u201d of Israel\u2019s call raised \u201cconcerns that their purpose is not to protect civilians,\u201d adding that the area was home to hundreds of thousands of people.<\/p>\n

The evacuation call \u201craises serious risks of violations of the laws of war,\u201d it added.<\/p>\n

Meanwhile,\u00a0Israel\u2019s far-right Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich warned Thursday that the\u00a0southern Beirut suburb Dahiyeh, a stronghold of Hezbollah, will face devastation similar to Gaza.<\/p>\n

\u201cVery soon Dahiyeh will resemble Khan Yunis,\u201d Smotrich said, referring to a southern Gaza city which has been heavily damaged by Israeli bombardments during the two-year war with Hamas.<\/p>\n

\u201cHezbollah made a mistake, and it will pay a heavy price. We are striking at the head of the octopus in Iran, and at the same time we will sever Hezbollah\u2019s arm,\u201d he said in a video statement as he visited Israel\u2019s northern border.<\/p>\n

Lebanese Social Affairs Minister Haneen Sayed said that 83,847 displaced people had registered in shelters due to the Israeli evacuation warnings, noting that the number of shelter centers had reached 399 across Lebanon.<\/p>\n
