DUBAI, United Arab Emirates (AP) \u2014 U.S. President Donald Trump<\/a> on Friday appeared to rule out talks with Iran absent its \u201cunconditional surrender.\u201d Israeli warplanes bombed Beirut and Tehran<\/a> as Iran launched more retaliatory strikes against Israel and Gulf countries on the seventh day of the war.<\/p>\n

The strikes in Lebanon were the heaviest since a 2024 ceasefire ended the last war between Israel and the Iran-backed Hezbollah, who fired rockets at Israel in the opening days of the war now underway. More than 95,000 people have fled Beirut\u2019s suburbs and southern Lebanon after sweeping Israeli evacuation warnings<\/a>.<\/p>\n

The U.S. and Israel have battered Iran with strikes, targeting their military capabilities, leadership and nuclear program<\/a>. The stated goals and timelines for the war have repeatedly shifted, as the U.S. has at times suggested it seeks to topple Iran\u2019s government or elevate new leadership from within<\/a>.<\/p>\n

The war has escalated to affect more than a dozen countries across the Middle East. London police said Friday that four men have been arrested<\/a> on suspicion of aiding Iran by spying on the Jewish community. Iran has been linked to previous attacks abroad on Iranian dissidents, Israelis and Jewish targets.<\/p>\n

Qatar\u2019s energy minister Saad al-Kaabi warned in an interview with the Financial Times that the war could \u201cbring down the economies of the world,\u201d predicting a widespread shutdown of Gulf energy exports that could send oil to $150 a barrel. <\/p>\n

AP correspondent Ben Thomas reports President Trump is weighing in on Iran\u2019s political future as the U.S. military continues pounding its forces.<\/p>\n

The price for a barrel of benchmark U.S. crude rose above $90 for the first time in more than two years<\/a> Friday, with gas prices rising 34 cents in just one week to a national average of $3.32 per gallon, according to motor club AAA.<\/p>\n

Trump says US will help rebuild Iran once it has \u2018ACCEPTABLE\u2019 leaders<\/p>\n

In a social media post on Friday, Trump said that after Iran\u2019s surrender, \u201cand the selection of a GREAT & ACCEPTABLE Leader(s),\u201d that the U.S. and its allies would help rebuild Iran, making it \u201ceconomically bigger, better, and stronger than ever before.\u201d <\/p>\n

Those comments were likely to raise further questions about the endgame of the war launched a week ago by the United States and Israel. The war has killed at least 1,230 people in Iran, more than 200 in Lebanon and around a dozen in Israel, according to officials in those countries. Six U.S. troops<\/a> have been killed.<\/p>\n

Iran\u2019s President Masoud Pezeshkian wrote on social media that \u201csome countries\u201d had begun mediation efforts in the conflict, without elaborating.<\/p>\n

On Thursday, Trump urged the Iranian people to \u201chelp take back your country,\u201d promising the U.S. would grant them \u201cimmunity,\u201d without elaborating.<\/p>\n

Trump also told media outlets that he should be involved in choosing a replacement for Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei<\/a>, who was killed in the opening strikes of the war. Trump spoke dismissively of Khamenei\u2019s son, Mojtaba Khamenei<\/a> \u2014 a front-runner to replace his father \u2014 calling him \u201ca lightweight.\u201d<\/p>\n

Iranian state television reported Friday that a leadership council had started discussing how to convene the country\u2019s Assembly of Experts, which will select the new supreme leader<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Buildings associated with the 88-member clerical panel, have been attacked during the Israeli-American air campaign. Israel has said it would target the next supreme leader if he poses a threat.<\/p>\n

Heavy strikes on Iran<\/p>\n

Israel\u2019s military said Friday it had launched \u201ca broad-scale wave of strikes\u201d on Tehran, Iran\u2019s capital, and that over the past week it has heavily bombed an extensive underground bunker that Iran\u2019s leaders had planned to use during the hostilities.<\/p>\n

Witnesses described Israeli airstrikes as particularly intense, shaking homes in the area and sending columns of smoke rising. Others reported explosions around the Iranian city of Kermanshah, an area that is home to multiple missile bases. They spoke anonymously for fear of retribution.<\/p>\n

Iran meanwhile launched missile and drone attacks at Israel, as well as Kuwait, Qatar, Saudi Arabia and Bahrain, all countries that host U.S. forces. There were no immediate reports of casualties.<\/p>\n

US says it hit an Iranian drone carrier<\/p>\n

The U.S. military said early Friday that it struck an Iranian drone carrier, setting it ablaze.<\/p>\n

The U.S. military\u2019s Central Command released black-and-white footage of the burning carrier. The Iranian military did not immediately acknowledge the attack. <\/p>\n

The drone carrier, the IRIS Shahid Bagheri, is a converted container ship with a 180-meter-long (197 yard) runway for drones. The vessel can travel without refueling in port for a distance greater than the Earth\u2019s circumference, reports said at the time of its 2025 inauguration.<\/p>\n

Earlier in the week, an American submarine sank an Iranian frigate off the coast of Sri Lanka<\/a> as it was returning from an exercise<\/a> hosted by the Indian navy that the U.S. also joined. Sri Lanka\u2019s navy rescued 32 crew members and recovered 87 bodies.<\/p>\n

Iran targets countries hosting US forces<\/p>\n

Countries across the Gulf said they intercepted Iranian missiles and drones on Friday, including attacks aimed at U.S. bases. Strikes have killed at least 15 civilians, including in Oman, Kuwait, Bahrain and the United Arab Emirates.<\/p>\n

Qatar and Saudi Arabia said Friday they intercepted projectiles headed toward U.S. bases. Air raid sirens sounded in Bahrain, where the Interior Ministry said Iranian strikes hit two hotels and a residential building, though no casualties were reported.<\/p>\n

The United Arab Emirates and Kuwait \u2014 where six U.S. soldiers were killed Sunday \u2014 also reported missiles and drones breaching their airspace.<\/p>\n

The government in Iraq\u2019s semiautonomous Kurdish region said production at an oil field had stopped after what it described as a terrorist attack from inside Iraq. It did not say who was responsible.<\/p>\n

In Israel, the sound of explosions could be heard in Tel Aviv throughout Friday after warnings about missiles incoming from Iran, as air defense systems worked to intercept the barrage. Five soldiers have been wounded in the fighting with Hezbollah, Israel\u2019s military said.<\/p>\n

Israel bombards Lebanon as death toll rises<\/p>\n

Israel has carried out waves of airstrikes on the southern suburbs of Beirut, where Hezbollah has a large presence but which is also home to hundreds of thousands of civilians. Lebanon\u2019s Health Ministry said 217 people had been killed by Israeli strikes since Monday and 798 wounded.<\/p>\n

Roads in the Lebanese capital were choked with evacuating traffic as smoke rose over the city\u2019s southern districts. Two hospitals evacuated patients and staff. <\/p>\n

\u201cWhat can we do? We prayed here under the tree. During the night we slept in the car because there is no place to stay,\u201d Jihan Shehadeh, one of the tens of thousands of displaced, said.<\/p>\n

One Israeli strike hit near the Iranian embassy in Beirut, according to Lebanon\u2019s state-run National News Agency. Israel\u2019s military did not immediately respond to questions about the report.<\/p>\n

Hezbollah\u2019s military command on Friday urged its fighters not to relent and to \u201cdefend the nation,\u201d casting the escalating war in religious terms and calling on them to \u201ckill them wherever you find them.\u201d<\/p>\n

Lebanon\u2019s Prime Minister Nawaf Salam slammed both Israel and Hezbollah, saying the Lebanese state and people \u201cdid not choose this war.\u201d<\/p>\n
