Doctors have issued a warning of a cancer symptom that is often mistaken for heartburn, with them urging people to never ignore the signs.<\/p>\n

Looking after ourselves physically and mentally has never been more important, especially with statistics showing how diseases such as colorectal cancer are on the rise<\/a> amongst young people.<\/p>\n

Naturally, cancer<\/a> is a frightening topic for many, but healthcare professionals insist that many types can be better treated if they are caught earlier.<\/p>\n

With this in mind, doctors in the National Health Service (NHS) in the UK<\/a> have started a campaign across social media<\/a> calling on people to visit doctors if they have concerns.<\/p>\n

Most notably, they are highlighting that regular heartburn could be a symptom of oesophageal cancer.<\/p>\n

The Mayo Clinic<\/a> explains that oesophageal cancer is a growth of cells that starts in the oesophagus.<\/p>\n

The oesophagus is a long, hollow tube that runs from the throat to the stomach and helps move swallowed food to stomach to be digested.<\/p>\n

Posts on X, across a host of different institutions tied to the NHS, have shared posts that encourage going to doctors to check for this kind of cancer.<\/p>\n

One post reads: “Oesophageal cancer is treatable when caught early. Don\u2019t ignore symptoms such as persistent heartburn, acid reflux or difficulty swallowing. Contact your GP practice.”<\/p>\n

The poster attached to the X post also reads: \u201cYou might call it heartburn or indigestion.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s probably nothing. But in some cases it could be a sign of cancer. Whatever you call it, don\u2019t ignore it. If it keeps coming back, contact your GP practice.\u201d<\/p>\n

Besides heartburn or regular indigestion, other symptoms include:Difficulty swallowingChest pain, pressure or burningCoughing or hoarsenessWeight loss without trying\"(UNILAD)\"(UNILAD)<\/p>\n

The Mayo clinic also notes: \u201cOesophageal cancer usually begins in the cells that line the inside of the esophagus. Oesophageal cancer can happen anywhere along the oesophagus.<\/p>\n

\u201cOesophageal cancer is more common in men. Risk factors include drinking alcohol and smoking.<\/p>\n

\u201cOesophageal cancer treatment often involves surgery to remove the cancer. Other treatments may include chemotherapy, radiation or a combination of the two. Targeted therapy and immunotherapy also may be used.\u201d<\/p>\n
