Charlie Puth is crediting Taylor Swift for helping him grow.<\/p>\n
Puth, whose album \u201cWhatever\u2019s Clever” comes out March 27, says the \u201cOpalite\u201d singer inspired him after she dropped his name<\/a> in the 2024 song \u201cThe Tortured Poets Department\u201d from her album of the same name<\/a>.<\/p>\n \u201cWe declared Charlie Puth should be a bigger artist,\u201d she sang.<\/p>\n \u201cThat\u2019s the lyric that inspired this album,\u201d Puth told Willie Geist in a preview clip of the upcoming March 8 edition of Sunday Sitdown.<\/p>\n \u201cBigger artist means that you have to open up,” he added.<\/p>\n The \u201cOne Call Away\u201d singer says Swift\u2019s abilities as a singer and songwriter help her connect with others. He took her name-checking him as a reminder for him to evolve.<\/p>\n \u201cThat\u2019s why millions of people can relate to her,\u201d he said. \u201cAnd I always felt like I kind of put a cap on how many people could relate to me. And that\u2019s a scary thing to open that can of worms.” <\/p>\n “You don\u2019t hear that as, like, ‘He\u2019s so talented, he should be even more popular than he is.’ You thought, she wants you to be a different kind of artist,” Geist clarified.<\/p>\n Puth agreed and said his takeaway from that lyric could benefit other artists, as well.<\/p>\n \u201cYeah, and it would be advice that I would pass down to other artists, too,\u201d he said. \u201cIt\u2019s a good push to hear that in a song.\u201d<\/p>\n Puth has spoken about being mentioned in \u201cThe Tortured Poets Department\u201d before.<\/p>\n
