Before we get a new take on\u00a0Neon Genesis Evangelion\u00a0from Yoko Taro<\/a>, studio Khara and Hideaki Anno went back to the past for the series\u2019 30th anniversary.<\/p>\n

After trying to contain leaks<\/a> of a new anime short celebrating the series\u2019 milestone, Khara accidentally leaked the short itself and decided to make it an official release to celebrate the five-year anniversary of Evangelion 3.0+1.0 Thrice Upon a Time<\/a>. For those who didn\u2019t watch the leaks, the short sees Asuka Langley Soryu take the stage alongside her Rebuild of Evangelion\u00a0counterpart, Asuka Shikinami Langley. After chatting about their experiences in their respective adaptations, Asuka confesses she\u2019s not happy about dying in\u00a0End of Evangelion\u00a0and then coming back to life as Shinji\u2019s strangling her.<\/p>\n

So she\u2019d like a better conclusion to her story, and that\u2019s where\u00a0Rebuild\u00a0Asuka comes in. Together, the two go through a number of \u201cwhat ifs\u201d that lead to different outcomes including her accidentally killing or hurting Shinji in some way (whoops), an endless wave of Asukas, and a single mech-sized version. Many of these sequences are inspired by the aesthetic of the original Gainax adaptation, while one takes after Rebuild\u2019s modern stylization.<\/p>\n

Eventually, as you\u2019ve probably heard even if you didn\u2019t watch the leaks, the two Asukas come upon a potential version where she and Shinji fell in love and started a family. But even that one\u2019s not to her liking, so she sticks with the original closer to her story, or at least this version of it. And with a highlight reel of Asuka scenes playing behind them, the Evangelion\u00a0cast plays the instrumental version of \u201cKomm, s\u00fcsser Tod\u201d from\u00a0End of Evangelion\u00a0and the show\u2019s \u201cNext Episode\u201d theme. If you want to get meta about it, you could argue the latter\u2019s inclusion hinted at the \u201cnext episode\u201d being Taro\u2019s incoming adaptation.<\/p>\n

Despite Khara\u2019s secrecy all amounting to a gag-filled clip show, the short is a touching tribute to one of\u00a0Evangelion\u2019s\u00a0key characters. Anything more groundbreaking can (and probably will) come in the future.<\/p>\n
