Australia granted humanitarian visas to two more members of the Iranian women\u2019s football delegation on Monday, with both opting to stay in the country because of fears for their \u200csafety if they returned home.<\/p>\n
Home Affairs Minister Tony Burke said a player and a support staff member accepted the government\u2019s offer, after five players from the team were granted asylum a day earlier.<\/p>\n
\u201cI made them the same offer that I made the five players the night before,\u201d Burke told reporters. \u201cIf they wanted to receive a humanitarian visa for Australia, which would have \u2060a pathway to a permanent visa, I had the paperwork ready to execute that immediately.\u201d<\/p>\n
Australian officials talked \u200cto most members of the team separately at Sydney airport and were informed of their options before they flew out of Australia.<\/p>\n
\u201cWhat we made sure of was \u200cthat there was no rushing, there was no pressure. Everything was about ensuring the \u2060dignity for those individuals \u2060to make a choice,\u201d Burke said during a media briefing in Canberra.<\/p>\n
Some discussed their options with family but they declined the \u200coffer to remain in Australia.
