Liza Minnelli<\/a> wrote in her new memoir that she and director Martin Scorsese<\/a> had a \u201cpassionate\u201d extramarital affair in the mid-1970s that plummeted into cocaine addiction.<\/p>\n

The two got together as they filmed the 1977 movie musical dud \u201cNew York, New York\u201d when Minnelli was married to Jack Haley Jr. and Scorsese was married to Julia Cameron.<\/p>\n

But it seemed the illicit couple\u2019s other love was coke.<\/p>\n

\u201cAs we filmed, Marty became a heavier and heavier user of cocaine,\u201d Minnelli wrote in the newly released \u201cKids, Wait Till You Hear This<\/a>!\u201d per Page Six<\/a>. \u201cIt seemed that it was no longer recreational for either of us. It was day and night. On the set, in between takes, and when we went out in the evening.\u201d <\/p>\n

\u201cWe were constant companions and I was right there beside him. Line by line, Marty claimed the drug helped his creative juices. Sure it did. Or is that just one more fabulous lie you tell yourself when you\u2019re in the grip of substance use?\u201d<\/p>\n

Minnelli, the Oscar-winning \u201cCabaret\u201d star whose mother was Judy Garland, wrote that she and the filmmaker had \u201cvolcanic\u201d tempers. Scorsese\u2019s was on display when he confronted her on the street over her affair with dancer and actor Mikhail Baryshnikov \u2015 while she walked with her husband.<\/p>\n

\u201cHow can you do this to me. How can you do this to me!\u201d Scorsese raged, she wrote, per Entertainment Weekly<\/a>.<\/p>\n

But he was a goodfella to Halston when they went to the fashion designer\u2019s home in a hunt for chemical enhancement.<\/p>\n

\u201c\u2018Give me all the drugs you\u2019ve got,\u2019\u201d Minnelli recalled telling Halston in a Page Six excerpt. The designer provided cocaine, marijuana, Valium and quaaludes.<\/p>\n

\u201cThen Marty, who had been waiting around the corner, came up to Halston and kissed him on the cheek. We thanked him and said goodbye.\u201d<\/p>\n

Minnelli asked Scorsese \u2015 an eventual 10-time Oscar nominee for best director and one-time winner for \u201cThe Departed\u201d \u2015 to direct her in \u201cThe Act\u201d for Broadway. But that didn\u2019t work out.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe needed a theatre director,\u201d Minnelli recalled, according to The Guardian<\/a>. \u201cMarty had to go, but unfortunately the only person who could fire him was yours truly \u2026 So I did what had to be done. It damn near killed me and broke my heart.\u201d <\/p>\n

Their relationship eventually fizzled, but Minnelli expressed relief that Scorsese kicked his addictions.<\/p>\n

But apparently, he held a grudge.<\/p>\n

\u201cNot all of the bad feelings have healed,\u201d she said, according to EW. \u201cYears later, I saw Marty at the Oscars ceremony in 2014 and walked up to say hello. Unfortunately, he turned away from me. Very sad.\u201d<\/p>\n
