If that doesn\u2019t work, there\u2019s only one serious option left: ending the war and opening the Strait of Hormuz.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmmmgk1hd00063b6rs477n2ya@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Those nations this week <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2026\/03\/11\/business\/oil-prices-rebound-iran-war-intl\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">agreed to send a record 400 million barrels<\/a> of oil into the market to counteract choked-off crude supplies. It\u2019s the equivalent of smashing the \u201cbreak in case of emergency\u201d glass for the oil market.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmmmgk1hd00073b6rm60uegwo@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            That\u2019s because this is truly an emergency. Oil has been stuck in the Middle East for more than a week, as Iran has threatened to attack any ship passing through the strait \u2013 a critical waterway through which a fifth of the world\u2019s crude travels.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmmmgk1hd00083b6rp5w11cmw@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            More than 15 million barrels of crude production per day have been taken offline, according to investment firm Raymond James, and millions more barrels are stuck on tankers. It\u2019s the biggest oil supply disruption in history \u2013 by a factor of two, according to Rapidan Energy Group.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmmmgk1hd00093b6rwa87sh5d@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            So, the 32 member nations of the International Energy Agency turned on their storage tank spigots to flood the market.\n    <\/p>\n<p>       <img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/il\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/03\/ap26069717821252.jpg\" alt=\"A gas station in New York on March 10, 2026. Gas prices have already risen 58 cents a gallon since the start of the war in Iran last month.\" class=\"image_large__dam-img image_large__dam-img--loading\" onload=\"this.classList.remove('image_large__dam-img--loading')\" onerror=\"imageLoadError(this)\" height=\"1337\" width=\"2000\" loading=\"lazy\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmmmgk1hd000a3b6rytah9a9e@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            It had better work, because when the Strategic Petroleum Reserve (SPR) of emergency oil is gone, it\u2019s gone, until new supply comes back online. The only way for that to happen is to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2026\/03\/11\/business\/price-oil-trump-gas-war\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">get oil flowing<\/a> through the Persian Gulf again.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmmmgk1hd000b3b6r3lagx9gm@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            And that can\u2019t happen until President Donald Trump figures out how to end the fighting and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2026\/03\/09\/business\/oil-iran-strait-navy-economy\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">secure safe passage<\/a> for the dozens of oil tankers trying to navigate the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2026\/03\/10\/politics\/iran-begins-laying-mines-in-strait-of-hormuz\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">now-treacherous channel<\/a>.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmmmgk1hd000d3b6r3m9pdql4@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            You don\u2019t have to look too far back to determine what this could mean for gas prices. Just four years ago, President Joe Biden coordinated what was then the largest-ever release of emergency oil: 182 million barrels.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmmmgk1hd000e3b6r606wgqx4@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            By the Biden administration\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/home.treasury.gov\/news\/press-releases\/jy0887\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">own calculations<\/a>, that SPR release reduced gas prices by between 17 cents and 42 cents over four months.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmmmgk1hd000f3b6rzt3rgqqs@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Another way to look at it: The SPR release meant drivers paid a record $5 for a gallon of gas, on average, over the course of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2026\/03\/10\/business\/emergency-oil-release-gas-prices\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">days instead of weeks<\/a>, according to Tom Kloza, an independent oil analyst and an advisor to Gulf Oil.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmmmgk1hd000g3b6rdn4lmk2u@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Gas prices have already risen 58 cents a gallon since the start of the war in Iran late last month, and industry analysts believe it\u2019s on the way to $4 by month-end if oil prices stay around their current $90 range for a prolonged period.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmmmgk1hd000h3b6rnrfsrlf3@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            That\u2019s because the SPR release is a relative drop in the bucket. Global oil consumption is around 100 million barrels per day; the new emergency oil is enough to fuel the world for about four days.\n    <\/p>\n<p>       <img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/il\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/03\/2026-03-11t175001z-1295147520-rc2b2kaw055q-rtrmadp-3-global-oil.JPG\" alt=\"Tankers sail near the Strait of Hormuz, as seen from northern Ras al-Khaimah, United Arab Emirates, on March 11, 2026. The war in Iran has effectively closed the Strait and affected global oil supply.\" class=\"image_large__dam-img image_large__dam-img--loading\" onload=\"this.classList.remove('image_large__dam-img--loading')\" onerror=\"imageLoadError(this)\" height=\"1056\" width=\"1578\" loading=\"lazy\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmmmgk1hd000i3b6rku782jos@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            And it\u2019s not coming all at once: \u201cThe emergency stocks will be made available to the market over a timeframe that is appropriate to the national circumstances of each member country,\u201d the IEA said in a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.iea.org\/news\/iea-member-countries-to-carry-out-largest-ever-oil-stock-release-amid-market-disruptions-from-middle-east-conflict\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">statement<\/a>.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmmmgk1hd000j3b6rey9kdbvi@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            That\u2019s why oil traders aren\u2019t getting excited \u2013 at least not yet. Oil actually got more expensive Wednesday after the announcement: US oil prices rose 5% to $88 a barrel. And <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2026\/03\/11\/business\/word-of-week-brent-cec\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Brent<\/a> crude, the international benchmark, was also up 5% to $92.50.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmmmgk1hd000k3b6rf9g1rice@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cThe IEA just shot its bullet,\u201d said Jay Hatfield, CEO and founder of asset manager Infrastructure Capital Advisors. \u201cI\u2019m not sure we\u2019re going to a lot below $80 until we get real clarity, not rhetoric, about how we get ships through the strait.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmmmgk1hd000m3b6rkzw5tmcc@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            The IEA said it could release even more SPR oil. But it doesn\u2019t have infinite stockpiles. The agreed-upon release represents a third of the oil currently in storage.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmmmgk1hd000n3b6rs1cc3a9u@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            And restoring those reserves is tricky: The oil has to be bought over the course of time so that prices don\u2019t jump. Trump, who criticized Biden\u2019s decision to release oil in 2022, vowed in his presidential campaign to refill America\u2019s SPR \u2013 an action his administration didn\u2019t take even when oil sat below $60 a barrel for a while.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmmmgk1hd000o3b6rfh0su33u@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            So countries won\u2019t go to zero reserves, and many will be hesitant to go much further than the action they\u2019ve already taken \u2013 particularly if the current release has little effect on oil and gas prices.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmmmgk1hd000p3b6rpo0qwaur@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Largely, the SPR release is a symbolic act, designed to boost sentiment in the market when traders are nervous, noted Matt Smith, analyst at markets data firm Kpler.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmmmgk1hd000q3b6rqt4zdpmn@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            But it doesn\u2019t solve the underlying problem.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmmmgk1hd000r3b6r5ahaljbe@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cThere\u2019s plenty of oil in the world,\u201d said Rob Thummel, Portfolio Manager at Tortoise Capital. \u201cThe question is: Can we get it moving through the Strait of Hormuz?
