Like many a big budget movie, this year\u2019s Oscars<\/a> telecast ended with a \u201cbonus scene\u201d\u2014one that boded well, and then not-so-great, for two-time host Conan O\u2019Brien<\/a>.<\/p>\n

With the One Battle After Another cast still on-stage reveling in their Best Picture win, and the closing credits music about to swell, Conan waved to the camera and shouted a heartfelt, \u201cWe love you, Marty Short!\u201d (Actor\/comedian Martin Short\u2019s oldest child, Katherine Short, died March 9 at age 42.)<\/p>\n

The telecast then cut to a pre-taped bit, where O\u2019Brien was seated in the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences\u2019 reception area, still tuxedoed and looking a bit anxious. An Academy bigwig played by Jim Downey<\/a>\u2014the former, longtime SNL writer who became O\u2019Brien\u2019s mentor\u2014arrived to welcome the ceremony\u2019s host, shaking his hand and saying, \u201cGreat show, Conan. Just terrific.<\/p>\n

\u201cIn fact,\u201d the tuxedoed exec continued, \u201cwe liked it so much, we\u2019ve decided to make you Oscars Host for Life.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cHost for Life?!\u201d a joyous Conan marveled. \u201cI don\u2019t know what to say.\u201d<\/p>\n

Downey\u2019s character led O\u2019Brien down a long hall, noting, \u201cYour efforts have pleased the Academy greatly. People have not stopped talking about your performance. It was really something.\u201d<\/p>\n

Conan responded, \u201cComing from the Academy, that\u2019s a real honor, sir.\u201d<\/p>\n

A moment later, they arrived at Suite 55 aka Conan\u2019s new office, complete with a brass \u201cCONAN O\u2019BRIEN Host for Life\u201d nameplate on the door. <\/p>\n

\u201cThis view is incredible,\u201d O\u2019Brien remarked, entering the sleek office space, as we spied a \u201cGot Crabs? Get Tested\u201d billboard outside the office window. <\/p>\n

Downey\u2019s character claimed to have forgotten the office keys and excused himself, saying, \u201cI\u2019ll be right back.\u201d <\/p>\n

What happened next was a direct callback to the lauded Paul Thomas Anderson film One Battle After Another<\/a>\u2014spoiler alert!\u2014as Conan kicked back in his snazzy ergonomic desk chair\u2026and an ominous gas started spilling out of a ceiling vent. Hazmat-suited men came to claim O\u2019Brien\u2019s lifeless body, his face frozen in a smile, and drag it down the hall to an incinerator chute. <\/p>\n

The Suite 55 nameplate was then promptly changed to read, \u201cMRBEAST Host for Life.\u201d<\/p>\n
