\"TrumpShell faces low oil prices and US tariff uncertainty (Image credits: X @Shell) US President Donald Trump\u2019s tariffs are creating uncertainty into the global economy, impacting investment decisions more than supply chain costs, said Shell India\u2019s Robin Mooldijk, president of projects and technology.\u201cThe primary effect is on our supply chain. It becomes more expensive and for a company like Shell it’s something that we could actually deal with,\u201d Mooldijk said.\u201cBut the bigger (effect) is even on the investments. Does it change the business climate and the supply-demand balance to the extent that\u2014a little bit cheaper or a little bit more expensive project, doesn’t really matter\u2014do we want to do it or not,\u201d he added, as quoted by ET.He noted that Shell\u2019s global chemicals business has seen demand impacts, with the speed of recovery remaining uncertain.<\/p>\n

Low oil prices pose challenges <\/p>\n

Shell continues to face low oil prices, with crude trading below $70 per barrel and forecasts predicting sub-$60 levels next year due to a supply glut.\u201cWe have an incredibly resilient upstream portfolio,\u201d Mooldijk said. \u201cSo, while (low oil price) hurts, it doesn’t hurt fundamentally at that level where we have to disappoint shareholders.\u201dIn India, Shell operates an LNG terminal in Gujarat, a small fuel retail chain, and the renewable energy platform Sprng Energy. Most of its 13,000 Indian employees work in Global Capability Centres (GCC) in Chennai and Bengaluru.Chennai hosts Shell\u2019s global monitoring centre for assets worldwide.\u201c(It) allows us to optimize across different assets. Because typically if assets are on a different continent, they don’t really talk to each other. But now you see that there’s similar work done by people sitting next to each other for different assets,\u201d Mooldijk said.Bengaluru houses one of Shell\u2019s three key global R&D hubs. \u201cBangalore for me is probably the key to commercialisation of technology,\u201d he added, highlighting Shell\u2019s Changemakers of Tomorrow initiative, which brings together startups, academics, suppliers, and industry executives to foster energy innovation.Mooldijk emphasised that Shell\u2019s India presence is no longer just about cost efficiency.\u201cIt may have started off a long time ago as cost efficiency. We’re so way beyond that. We reached the point that we cannot do without our presence in India and the same applies to our IT organisation,\u201d he said, as quoted by ET.<\/p>\n

Renewable energy outlook<\/p>\n

Shell is collaborating with Indian universities and suppliers to develop frugal technologies that enhance competitiveness.While some global oil companies have scaled back renewable ambitions due to market challenges, Shell continues to develop technology for sustainable energy.\u201cIt’s the market that drives how fast we go.
