There’s a pretty good chance that some of you out there still use the original Pixel Watch. Google’s first smartwatch was a fantastic piece of hardware, but did lack a few vital pieces that make the current iterations sure-fire winners in the wearable space.<\/p>\n

The Pixel Watch came with three years of software support, which ended in October 2025<\/a>. But that doesn’t mean that the watch is completely useless now, it just means that the device won’t be getting software updates anymore, or so we thought.<\/p>\n

A surprise update<\/p>\n

It came as a bit of a surprise, but Google has now announced<\/a> a new software update for the Pixel Watch (via 9to5Google<\/a>). Now, before you get too excited, this doesn’t bring any new software features and is instead a maintenance update.<\/p>\n

Google shares that this is a modem update that will begin rolling out today, and continue over the coming weeks. Users should see a notification on their Pixel Watch when the update is available. Naturally, you should download it when you see it.<\/p>\n

As far as what the update consists of, well, Google states in its notes that this update consists of “bug fixes to improve E911 Emergency dialing behavior.” It’s unclear what exactly has changed with the latest update, but if this makes the feature better or more reliable, we really can’t complain.<\/p>\n

About a year ago, Google made changes<\/a> to the way emergency services could be contacted. Previously, you could press the crown button five times in order to activate an emergency call. The update made a change that required the touchscreen be pressed for three seconds in order to confirm that action.<\/p>\n

It’s not a big deal, but if you’re in an emergency, this is probably not an extra step you want to take. The good news is that you can keep the default method that doesn’t require an additional step. If you own or use an original Pixel Watch, you’ll want to be on the lookout for this new update.
