{"id":346350,"date":"2026-03-18T23:23:10","date_gmt":"2026-03-18T23:23:10","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/il\/346350\/"},"modified":"2026-03-18T23:23:10","modified_gmt":"2026-03-18T23:23:10","slug":"its-not-panic-buying-farmers-defend-stockpiling-as-regional-australia-bears-brunt-of-fuel-crisis-rural-and-regional-australia","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/il\/346350\/","title":{"rendered":"\u2018It\u2019s not panic-buying\u2019: farmers defend stockpiling as regional Australia bears brunt of fuel crisis | Rural and regional Australia"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Rural fuel distributor Paul McCallum hopes the worst is over.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">At the start of the month, as fuel prices surged after the US and Israel bombed Iran, farmers started bringing their diesel orders forward, requesting \u201ca boisterous but not over the top\u201d 1.5m litres from his company, Inland Petroleum.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">As an independent company not affiliated with one of the major fuel importers, Inland Petroleum buys its diesel and petrol on the wholesale market and is usually told by suppliers by lunchtime of the following day\u2019s prices.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">\u201cThe [prices] were reviewed at about 4pm, which was very unusual, and we had about an 8c increase and that immediately started to concern us,\u201d he said. \u201cNow, we\u2019ve seen wholesale refined product prices go up 70c a litre.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">The federal government has said there are no fuel shortages and repeatedly urged people not to panic-buy after <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/australia-news\/2026\/mar\/16\/dozens-of-australian-petrol-stations-run-out-of-fuel-as-panic-buying-continues\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">dozens of service stations across Australia ran out of petrol<\/a> amid a disruption to energy supplies caused by the Middle East conflict.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">The crisis, which is particularly acute in regional Australia, has put a spotlight on the way Australia\u2019s fuel industry works as some independent distributors say they cannot get enough fuel.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">McCallum, who runs about a dozen retail petrol stations in western New South Wales, said he was not aware of any huge rush of individual customers panic-buying in the \u201cway the government has indicated\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">However, he said there had been a surge in demand from farmers who were \u201cimmediately very concerned\u201d about diesel prices and a perceived lack of availability and wanted to shore up their own supplies.<\/p>\n<p><a data-link-name=\"standard link button Primary\" data-spacefinder-role=\"inline\" data-ignore=\"global-link-styling\" href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/email-newsletters?CMP=copyembed&amp;CMP=emailbutton\" class=\"dcr-svb9qg\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Sign up for the Breaking News Australia email<\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">McCallum said he was struggling to get fuel from the major companies \u2013 Mobil, BP, Ampol and Shell, which is run by Viva Energy in Australia.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">He said the companies were allocating stock to select retail service stations, which meant independent distributors like his company, and even some of the smaller branded sites, were missing out.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">\u201cWe actually cart fuel for some branded service stations \u2013 both Ampol and Shell \u2013 and \u2026 they\u2019ve told us we can\u2019t pick up today because they haven\u2019t got any allocation,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">\u201cWhether those so-called allocation limits are being put on because they\u2019re trying to preserve the fuel and spread it out among everybody, I don\u2019t know; I\u2019m not privy to what Shell does or what Ampol does but they are definitely doing allocation.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Nathan Falvo, who made the news on the weekend when his petrol station in Victoria\u2019s north-west completely ran dry, also raised concerns about fuel allocation.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">On Wednesday, Falvo told Guardian Australia he had just received another top-up delivery after his store in Robinvale again ran out of unleaded and was left for about 10 hours without any petrol.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Falvo said each week he typically sold between 12,000 and 18,000 litres of unleaded and diesel fuel combined and would normally receive two to three refills from a local distributor supplied by one of the majors in Melbourne.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">\u201cThere was a period now when we had no allocation for unleaded or diesel,\u201d he said. \u201cWe weren\u2019t receiving our normal orders.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Guardian Australia contacted Mobil, BP, Ampol and Viva Energy for comment. The four companies supply about 85% of Australia\u2019s liquid fuels, according to the peak body that represents them \u2013 the Australian Institute of Petroleum.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Last week, the AIP said its members did not have \u201csufficient inventory\u201d to supply businesses that could not obtain fuel from their regular suppliers or had relied on the spot market.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">\u201cIn these circumstances, AIP members have had to prioritise supply to their regular customers and cease spot sales,\u201d the AIP\u2019s chief executive, Malcolm Roberts, said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">The Barwon MP, Roy Butler, whose rural electorate encompasses nearly half of NSW, said regional industries were bearing the brunt of the supply crisis and the federal government should facilitate plans for bulk diesel storage.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">\u201cSupply seems to be most restricted to independent fuel outlets, which quite often are the only available outlet in remote areas,\u201d he said. \u201cA supply interruption now can have financial repercussions well into the future.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">The prime minister, Anthony Albanese, on Wednesday announced a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/australia-news\/2026\/mar\/18\/anthony-albanese-national-cabinet-iran-war-fuel-shortages-self-reliance-economic-resilience\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">snap meeting of national cabinet on fuel supply<\/a> set to take place on Thursday morning, the latest in a string of meetings at state and federal levels to discuss the problem.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Albanese stressed that so far all of Australia\u2019s imports of petrol and diesel had arrived as expected but acknowledged a surge in demand had led to some shortages, particularly of diesel.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">The government had already directed fuel companies to release nearly one-fifth of reserve petrol and diesel supplies, relaxed standards to allow <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/australia-news\/2026\/mar\/12\/nsw-prepares-for-fuel-shortages-at-hospitals-as-australia-relaxes-petrol-standards-for-60-days\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">higher sulphur levels in fuel<\/a> and promised to crack down on any price-gouging by petrol retailers.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">The NSW sheep farmer Graham Gilmore said diesel prices soared from $1.76 a litre to $3 in just a few days at the start of the month, as he defended those in the agriculture industry who had chosen to stockpile fuel.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">\u201cIt would be a very poor decision for any business to not buy it at the lower price,\u201d he said. \u201cIt\u2019s not panic-buying. On 10,000 litres at an extra $1.25, that\u2019s $12,000.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">\u201cIf you don\u2019t have the fuel, you\u2019re immediately in trouble.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"Rural fuel distributor Paul McCallum hopes the worst is over.
