You may be loving Netflix\u2019s live-action\u00a0<\/a>One Piece<\/a>\u00a0remake, but there\u2019s another adaptation on the horizon. That\u2019d be\u00a0The One Piece<\/a>,\u00a0helmed by\u00a0Spy x Family\u00a0studio Wit and announced back in 2024, a project we\u2019ve heard very little about since then.<\/p>\n

In a recent episode of The Ai Show<\/a>, Wit president George Wada opened up on what purpose this second remake serves. In his accounting, creator Eiichiro Oda wanted a version of the show that could appeal to younger fans, particularly on a visual level. Toei\u2019s been adapting the manga since the late 90s, and to account for that aforementioned audience not liking the style or \u201coutdated elements\u201d of those early episodes, Wit\u2019s aiming to use \u201cmodern techniques\u201d said demographic\u2019s become accustomed to in other more recent shonen anime they\u2019ve likely seen.<\/p>\n

Toei\u2019s One Piece\u00a0took over 60 episodes to adapt the East Blue Saga, and thanks to its hour-long runtimes, it took Netflix took eight hours to do it in live-action. It sounds like Wit\u2019s version will lean ore toward the former, but not as long, since Wada brought up \u201ctight\u201d pacing to cut down on the filler and avoid \u201cunneccesary stretching.\u201d (Luffy, you\u2019re exempt from this, kiddo. Every\u00a0bit of stretching you do is necessary.)<\/p>\n

But for as much talk as there was of distancing itself from Toei\u2019s version, Wada hopes The One Piece can\u00a0compliment that original take while being of equal calibur to its own works like Spy x Family\u00a0and\u00a0Vinland Saga, and staying true to the creator\u2019s vision. To him, the most important part of this endeavor is \u201cunderstanding [Oda] and the best way to present what he wants to show or express.\u201d<\/p>\n

The One Piece\u00a0will hit Netflix in the near future, and hopefully, we\u2019ll learn more about how much territory it\u2019ll cover sooner rather than later.<\/p>\n
