Spanish Prime \u200cMinister Pedro Sanchez has said Israel \u201cseeks to inflict the same level \u2060of damage and destruction\u201d on Lebanon \u2060as on the Gaza Strip, as its army continues attacks across the neighbouring country amid plans to occupy its south.<\/p>\n

In an address before the lower house on Wednesday, Sanchez also said his government \u2060stood against the United States-Israeli \u2060war on Iran<\/a>, which presented a \u201cfar worse\u201d scenario than the invasion of Iraq in 2003.<\/p>\n

\u201cThis is not the same scenario as the illegal war in Iraq. We are facing something far worse. Much worse. With a potential impact that is far broader and far deeper,\u201d he told parliament.<\/p>\n

Sanchez added that Iran\u2019s new supreme \u2060leader was more hardline \u2060than his predecessor. \u201cMojtaba Khamenei<\/a> \u2060is an equally dictatorial and even more bloodthirsty tyrant \u200cthan his father,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

The left-wing prime minister has been one of the few leaders in Europe to condemn the US-Israel attack on Iran, describing it as \u201cunjustifiable\u201d.<\/p>\n

Spain has also been one of the few European nations to consistently condemn and take action against Israel\u2019s ongoing genocidal war on Gaza. More than 72,000 Palestinians have been killed and vast swaths of Gaza have been turned into rubble in Israeli attacks since October 7, 2023. Despite a \u201cceasefire\u201d in place since October 2025, Israel has killed more than 800 Palestinians in almost daily breaches of the Trump-brokered truce.<\/p>\n

In October, Spain\u2019s parliament\u00a0approved the enshrinement\u00a0in law of a total arms embargo on Israel<\/a>, permanently banning the sale of weapons, dual-use technology and military equipment in response to the genocide.<\/p>\n

Earlier this month, the Spanish government decided \u2060to withdraw its \u2060ambassador to Israel<\/a>, in a sign of rising diplomatic tensions.<\/p>\n

Israel\u2019s preparations to invade Lebanon and take control of territory up to 30km (18.6 miles) inside its southern border have also drawn condemnation from Canada<\/a>, which warned that Lebanese sovereignty and territorial integrity \u201cmust not be violated\u201d.<\/p>\n

France\u2019s Minister for Foreign Affairs Jean-Noel Barrot said Israel should refrain from its planned occupation of southern Lebanon, warning that such a move would have a dire effect on civilians.<\/p>\n

Israel\u2019s Minister of Defense Israel Katz said Israel\u2019s military was \u201cfollowing the model of Rafah and Beit Hanoon\u201d in Lebanon, two cities in Gaza that were razed to the ground amid the genocidal war on the Palestinian enclave.<\/p>\n

On Monday, Israel\u2019s far-right Minister of Finance\u00a0Bezalel Smotrich<\/a> went even further in calling for Israel\u2019s official annexation of southern Lebanon, saying a \u201cchange of Israel\u2019s borders\u201d was necessary.<\/p>\n

The world\u2019s top genocide scholars formally declared in September that Israel\u2019s war on Gaza meets the legal definition of genocide<\/a>.
