Nikon Europe has just announced a new warranty policy: every new NIKKOR Z-mount lens purchased from an authorised Nikon retailer in Europe is now covered by a\u00a0free, five-year warranty<\/a>\u00a0against manufacturing defects. No hidden fees, no tier system, no annual subscription. Buy a Z lens, register<\/a> it, done. Such a move is usually a testament to the manufacturer\u2019s confidence in their product and quality assurance, and it\u2019s also nice and beneficial for us users.<\/p>\n

Not all warranties are born equal. Companies use different methods, subscriptions, registration, and terms for different locations, market tiers, and product types. While all manufacturers aspire to strike a decent balance of affordability, quality, and survivability, an occasional fault may slip through and mar an expensive piece of gear. Companies have several ways to deal with these kinds of malfunctions: A robust warranty provides good coverage for those one-in-a-million occurrences. When a systemic problem comes along, a recall or service advisory<\/a> is the expected response. While this may hurt the company\u2019s reputation, I personally appreciate such actions \u2013 this is what accountability and full responsibility look like.<\/p>\n

It\u2019s actually pretty simple:<\/p>\n

The warranty covers faults arising from manufacturing defects within the first five years of ownership. Qualifying lenses purchased through authorised channels will be repaired free of charge by authorised Nikon technicians, with the proper skill, gear, and know-how. The company also guarantees the use of genuine Nikon parts. This is actually more important than it seems: As lenses get more sophisticated, compact, and feature-packed, it\u2019s becoming increasingly harder to service them. It also requires precision equipment. So even if your lens isn\u2019t covered, I\u2019d recommend repairing it at a Nikon-authorised service center.<\/p>\n

All NIKKOR Z-mount lenses<\/a> are included, including kit lenses and teleconverters<\/a>. What it won\u2019t cover, predictably, is accidental damage. Dropping your NIKKOR 400mm f\/2.8 TC VR S<\/a> off a monopod at golden hour is very much still on you (and your insurance policy).
