Or, in other words, they\u2019re jam-packed. In her decorative scenes, nature and mythology explode across surreal environments and Francesca calls them \u201cslightly otherworldly\u201d. In one work, Francesca renders the would-be gruesomeness of an exposed brain with a composition of comic-esque boxes that show the inner workings of the character\u2019s brain \u2013 this was a collaboration with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.lesechos.fr\/\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">Les Echos<\/a>, developed alongside biologist Guillaume Fond\u2019s research in psychonutrition. \u201cThe challenge was translating complex ideas around diet and mental health into imagery that felt clear, engaging and visually immediate,\u201d says Francesca.<\/p>\n<p data-block-key=\"6v696\">Francesca\u2019s process is intuitive, combining traditional and digital techniques by progressing from the hand-drawn to the digitally altered. In Francesca\u2019s eyes, if the illustrations are \u201cslightly imperfect\u201d, then she\u2019s succeeded in her work. The illustrator is inspired by the botanical, the psychedelic and the retro, and the visual noise of ancient embroideries plays a big role in her busy compositions. In her newest editorial illustration for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/p\/DUlwFgzk5j_\/\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">Herm\u00e9s<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/p\/DUlwFgzk5j_\/\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">Paris<\/a>, the animal kingdom has a dinner party on blue grass and pink skies, punctuating the absurdist qualities she does so well.<\/p>\n<p data-block-key=\"b01lv\">Francesca recently illustrated the cover of <a href=\"https:\/\/grafica-magazine.com\/\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">Grafica Magazine<\/a>, an Italian quarterly magazine dedicated to visual communication, art directed by Stefano Cipolla and Elisa Abbadessa. Depicting the world and central figure on her own terms, she connects to her upbringing in Sardinia and its rich cultural heritage, allowing Francesca to put a little bit of home, as well as themes of identity and memory, through an imaginative lens that raises the standard for editorial illustration.<\/p>\n<p><script async src=\"\/\/www.instagram.com\/embed.js\"><\/script><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"Francesca Melis\u2019 illustrations are richly detailed.
