Greece will raise its gross monthly minimum wage by 4.5% from April, the sixth rise in four years, it \u200bsaid on Thursday, as it seeks to restore living \u200cstandards battered by a decade-long financial crisis and shield consumers from rising energy costs amid the Iran conflict.<\/p>\n

Greece is recovering strongly from a 2009-2018 \u200bdebt crisis that wiped out nearly a fourth of its \u200boutput and slashed pensions and wages as part of \u2060austerity in exchange for \u20ac290 billion ($335 billion) in bailout \u200bloans.<\/p>\n

The center-right government of Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis, who won a \u200bsecond term in 2023, has cut taxes and social security contributions and increased the minimum salary for full-time employees five times since 2022 as it \u200btargets a minimum monthly salary of \u20ac950 by 2027.<\/p>\n

But \u200bpurchasing power in the country still trails the European average and is taking \u200ca \u2060fresh blow from surging energy prices stemming from the ongoing US-Israeli war with Iran and fueling inflation.<\/p>\n

Greece has imposed a cap on profit margins on fuel and some supermarket goods and last \u200bweek announced subsidies for fuel \u200band fertilizers and \u2060ferry ticket discounts.<\/p>\n

\u201cTo further support the people, we will jointly decide today a new rise in \u200bthe minimum wage from April 1,\u201d Mitsotakis told \u200ba cabinet \u2060meeting on Thursday. He said his labor minister will propose that the gross monthly minimum wage be increased to \u20ac920 from \u2060\u20ac880 from April 1.<\/p>\n

The government consults employers \u200band employees before setting the minimum wage which needs cabinet approval to take effect.
