Billy Ray Cyrus<\/a>\u2018s involvement in the Hannah Montana 20th Anniversary Special<\/a>\u00a0was already a sign that things between him and his daughter, Miley Cyrus, were better than they had reportedly been for the past few years. The two reportedly had a falling out after his divorce from Miley\u2019s mom, Tish<\/a>, but are said to be in better terms now. Or at least, that\u2019s what we thought. Until he didn\u2019t show up to the premiere of the special.<\/p>\n

What happened? Rob Shuter<\/a> is reporting that Miley<\/a> informed his dad he was welcome at the premiere, but without his girlfriend, Elizabeth Hurley. \u201cMiley wants a relationship with her dad,\u201d\u00a0one insider told the gossip columnist.\u00a0\u201cBut her mom comes first. That\u2019s not negotiable.\u201d<\/p>\n

Reportedly, it wasn\u2019t about the person, but the time and place. \u201cShe has nothing against Elizabeth,\u201d\u00a0the source explained.\u00a0\u201cBut this wasn\u2019t the moment for a blended-family debut.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cThis was her mom\u2019s night. Her mom gave her all this,\u201d\u00a0the insider added.\u00a0\u201cAnd Miley was fiercely protective of that.\u201d<\/p>\n

Her dad didn\u2019t agree. \u201cHe said, \u2018If Elizabeth\u2019s not invited, I\u2019m not coming,\u2019\u201d\u00a0the source explained.\u00a0\u201cFor him, it was a package deal.\u201d And he indeed skipped the premiere, despite being part of the anniversary special.<\/p>\n

Billy Ray and Hurley met in 2022 on the set of\u00a0Christmas in Paradise. They reportedly started dating in 2025, after Billy Ray and Tish divorced.<\/p>\n

\u201cHe wasn\u2019t going to separate his personal life to make anyone else comfortable,\u201d\u00a0the insider said.\u00a0\u201cHe felt standing by Elizabeth mattered more.\u201d<\/p>\n

And if it was about making a stand, Miley made hers. With her mom. \u201cMiley\u2019s trying,\u201d\u00a0the source explained.\u00a0\u201cBut rebuilding with her dad doesn\u2019t mean rewriting her loyalty. Her mom is her priority \u2014 always.\u201d<\/p>\n

Will father and daughter ever find common ground again? \u201cThey\u2019re communicating again,\u201d\u00a0the insider also said.\u00a0\u201cBut healed? Not even close.\u201d<\/p>\n

Author\u00a0Ashley Spencer\u2019s new book,\u00a0Disney High: The Untold Story of the Rise and Fall of Disney Channel\u2019s Tween Empire, revealed that even though Billy Ray Cyrus was already famous when Hannah Montana<\/a> started, he didn\u2019t use his influence to help his daughter. \u201cMiley being Billy Ray\u2019s progeny hadn\u2019t helped her get the part,\u201d casting agent\u00a0Catherine Stroud\u00a0said in the book.<\/p>\n

It was reportedly Tish, Miley\u2019s mom, who \u201cfloated the idea\u201d of Billy Ray playing Miley\u2019s dad on the show.<\/p>\n

\u201cWanting to keep the mother of their new star happy, the network agreed to humor the Cyruses and allowed Billy Ray to read,\u201d Stroud said. The rest is, as they say, history.<\/p>\n

However, Billy Ray later said that his being on the show \u201cdestroyed\u201d his whole family. \u201cI\u2019d take it back in a second. For my family to be here and just everybody be OK, safe and sound and happy and normal would have been fantastic,\u201d he told\u00a0GQ<\/a>\u00a0in 2011. \u201cHeck, yeah. I\u2019d erase it all in a second if I could.\u201d<\/p>\n

Still, the two reunited to celebrate Hannah Montana\u2019s legacy. Let\u2019s see if they can now find a way to mend their real-life relationship.<\/p>\n
