Legendary actor Al Pacino revealed that he went from having $50 million to nothing after a corrupt accountant mismanaged his finances in what later turned out to be a Ponzi scheme<\/a>. \u201cI was broke,\u201d Pacino wrote in his 2024 memoir \u201cSonny Boy.\u201d \u201cI had $50 million, and then I had nothing.\u201d<\/p>\n

How $50 Million Disappeared<\/p>\n

The loss didn’t happen overnight. Pacino said he had started getting warnings around 2011 that his accountant \u201cwas not to be trusted,\u201d but at the time, his lifestyle masked the problem. He was renting an expensive Beverly Hills, California home, flying family and friends across Europe on a private jet, and booking entire floors of luxury hotels.<\/p>\n

When he finally took a closer look at his finances, he got suspicious that they hadn\u2019t really budged, despite spending all this money. \u201cTime stopped,\u201d he wrote. \u201cI am f****d.\u201d<\/p>\n

Pacino wrote in his memoir that even large paychecks didn’t stretch<\/a> as far as people might assume. \u201cIn this business, when you make $10 million dollars for a film, it’s not $10 million\u2026 it’s $4.5 million in your pocket,\u201d he said, pointing to agents, lawyers, and taxes taking a large cut.<\/p>\n

At the same time, his spending was extreme. He has described blowing money<\/a> on excess purchases, including buying 23 cellphones and 16 cars, on top of the luxury lifestyle. \u201cThe landscaper was getting $400,000 a year,\u201d he wrote, adding it was for a property he didn’t even live in. He described the situation as \u201ca crazy montage of loss,\u201d where money was constantly going out with little control.<\/p>\n

By the time he realized what had happened, Pacino was already in his 70s. The big paydays that once defined his career were no longer guaranteed, and roles were becoming harder to find.<\/p>\n

Taking Roles Just For The Paycheck<\/p>\n

Before his financial collapse, Pacino said he chose roles based on whether he connected with them. That changed completely once he lost his money.<\/p>\n

\u201c\u2018Jack and Jill’ was the first film I made after I lost my money. To be honest, I did it because I didn’t have anything else,\u201d he admitted. \u201cThey paid me a lot for it. So I went out and did it, and it helped.\u201d<\/p>\n

He also dropped his long-standing resistance to commercials and began charging for speaking engagements he once did for free. He even sold one of his homes to stabilize his finances.<\/p>\n

A Rare Family Moment At 85<\/p>\n

Pacino made a rare public appearance recently with three of his adult children, Julie, Anton, and Olivia, at the Los Angeles premiere of Julie’s film \u201cI Live Here Now,\u201d her directorial debut.<\/p>\n

The outing offered a glimpse into his personal life, which now includes not only his adult children but also his 2-year-old son, Roman.<\/p>\n
