Millions of Americans are expected to take to the streets on Saturday for the No Kings protests<\/a> against the Trump administration<\/a>. More than 3,000 events are planned in all 50 states, plus in 16 countries, according to a coalition of organizers that includes \u201canti-authoritarian\u201d groups Indivisible and 50501, labor unions and other grassroots organizations.<\/p>\n

\u201cI would expect March 28 to be the biggest protest in American history,\u201d said Ezra Levin, co-founder of Indivisible.<\/p>\n

Saturday\u2019s protest will be the third No Kings; the last one in October drew<\/a> 7 million people nationwide. A \u201cflagship\u201d event will be held in Minnesota\u2019s Twin Cities, Minneapolis and St Paul, in recognition of residents\u2019 resistance<\/a> to the surge of Immigration Customs Enforcement (ICE<\/a>) agents that descended on the cities this winter. The St Paul rally<\/a> will feature Senator Bernie Sanders, actor Jane Fonda and musicians Bruce Springsteen and Joan Baez.<\/p>\n

More than two-thirds of participants who have RSVP\u2019d are in \u201coutside of major urban centers\u201d, including Republican-controlled areas and bellwether counties, said Leah Greenberg, co-founder of Indivisible<\/a>, at a press conference on Thursday.<\/p>\n

A multiplicity of stressors is expected to bring out protesters across issues, organizers said, from ICE raids to voting<\/a> rights<\/a> threats<\/a>. \u201cSince the last No Kings, we\u2019re seeing higher gas prices<\/a> and<\/a> groceries<\/a>, all while there\u2019s an illegal war in Iran<\/a>,\u201d said Sarah Parker, the executive director of Voices of Florida and a national coordinator for the 50501<\/a> movement. \u201cThe people of America are pissed.\u201d<\/p>\n

The No Kings coalition has repeatedly emphasized the \u201cnonviolent\u201d nature of the day of action. Parker noted that leaders were being trained in de-escalation. The No Kings website states that participants are not allowed to bring any weapons, including legally permitted ones. During the first No Kings Day in June, one Salt Lake City protester was killed<\/a> and another was injured by a local 50501 \u201cpeacekeeper\u201d<\/a> volunteer who saw the latter carrying a firearm, even though<\/a> doing so is legal under Utah law<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Though Trump has backed off his explicit disparaging<\/a> of the No Kings protests, his administration continues to target<\/a> and federally prosecute anti-ICE protesters, with nine people found guilty<\/a> of charges of \u201cantifa\u201d terrorism in a recent Texas trial over a Fourth of July demonstration outside a detention facility. In January, Minneapolis residents Renee Good<\/a> and Alex Pretti<\/a> were killed by federal immigration agents as they were documenting the agents\u2019 activities.<\/p>\n

During the press conference, organizers<\/a> were asked about reports of ICE agents putting boots on the ground at Saturday\u2019s protests \u2013 placing a higher level of risk for undocumented and other marginalized protesters. (Last year, journalist Mario Guevara was detained and ultimately deported<\/a> after livestreaming the June No Kings protest.) Deirdre Schifeling, American Civil Liberties Union\u2019s chief political and advocacy officer, advised that any threats of ICE presence were an intimidation tactic and directed attenders to the \u201cknow your rights\u201d materials<\/a> on the ACLU\u2019s site.<\/p>\n

Organizers have repeatedly emphasized<\/a> that No Kings Day is only one aspect of broader efforts toward building people power and fighting the Trump administration \u2013 and that that work \u201cdoesn\u2019t end after March 28\u201d.<\/p>\n
