transcranial magnetic stimulation<\/a> (TMS), a non-invasive therapy that uses magnetic pulses to stimulate nerve cells in the brain.<\/p>\nThe FDA approved TMS for depression in 2008, but many patients are still unfamiliar with it.<\/p>\n
Within two sessions, Shock noticed results.<\/p>\n
\u201cI think more people are starting to realize that you do not have to do the default, which is try too many medications,\u201d said Mah Mekolle, a psychiatric nurse practitioner with Serenity Mental Health Centers.<\/p>\n
Mekolle said that while medication works for some people, others don\u2019t respond as well, which is why treatments like TMS can offer another option.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe can direct these magnetic frequencies to specific parts of the brain involved in mood regulation, and we can repair or rewire the connections in that area,\u201d she explained.<\/p>\n
Some patients confuse TMS with electroconvulsive therapy (ECT), or \u201cshock therapy,\u201d but experts say TMS does not require anesthesia and is not the same treatment.<\/p>\n
Patients typically come in for short sessions several times a week and wear a helmet-like device during treatment.<\/p>\n
\u201cPeople do about 30 to 36 sessions in a TMS round, so it might take them about six to eight weeks to complete the therapy,\u201d Mekolle said.<\/p>\n
Shock said treatment has helped her move forward both physically and mentally.<\/p>\n
\u201cI\u2019ve advanced in my career, I\u2019ve advanced in my health and fitness, my family relationships, and even my relationship with myself, which is the most important,\u201d she said. \u201cIt\u2019s okay if you\u2019re not in a good spot \u2014 let\u2019s get you the tools to be where you want to be.\u201d<\/p>\n
Because depression affects everyone differently, experts say it\u2019s important to work with a provider to find the treatment that works best for you \u2014 whether that\u2019s medication, counseling or therapies like TMS.<\/p>\n
