Post 2000, Batman has become a pop culture icon with numerous comic book adaptations under his belt. The success of The Dark Knight has sparked a wave of new characters resembling the iconic character.

Beyond mere imitation, the bat’s character has seen various copycats and knockoffs that take more than a few cues from Batman. From his tragic backstory to his billionaire Playboy alter ego and even his costume design, there have been more than a few instances of characters following this archetype appearing in modern times.

Accordingly, the purpose of this list is to highlight 10 characters, whether those that pay due homage to the character or those seeking to be cynical parodies of Batman. This list contains ten of the best imitations of the Caped Crusader that have been introduced since the year 2000.

                        The Boys’ Black Noir

When it comes to Black Noir from Garth Ennis’ The Boys comic series, a distinction must be made between his comic and TV show counterparts. Black Noir from the 2005 The Boys comic is, on the surface, a highly skilled, silent assassin dressed in black and brandishing weapons, but is actually a secret clone of Homelander, an evil Superman archetype.

The TV show version of Block Noir is the one that most closely resembles The Dark Knight. Unlike his comic counterpart, he is fully mute; he is not a clone of Homelander, and he lacks flashy powers and instead relies on his skill and enhanced strength in combat.

A parallel can be clearly drawn between Black Noir and Batman. Batman is a member of the Justice League, and Black Noir is a member of the Seven. They both wear black and operate as combat specialists, using gadgets and weapons to their advantage.

Ultimate Adventures’ Hawk-Owl, aka Jack Danner

marvel batman parody hawk-owl 3

Ron Zimmerman & Duncan Fegredo’s Hawk Owl is a dark parody of Batman introduced in 2002 in Marvel’s Ultimate Universe. On the surface, he seems to be exactly like Batman, but when readers take a closer look, he appears to be a realistic take on what Batman would be if he existed.

Jack Danner is a wealthy man who wishes to become a superhero, so he uses his wealth to build gadgets, a costume, and a secret identity to fight crime at night as Hawk-Owl. What makes him distinct from Batman is his motivation: Batman is driven by a sense of justice, but Hawk by obsession.

Hawk-Owl is a deeply disturbed man living out his fantasy of being a superhero. His mental instability drove him to wear a costume and fight crime as a means of escapism. He is delusional about the effectiveness of his methods; contrary to what he believes, his actions make matters worse, making him the ideal satirical take on Batman.

                        DC’s own Ghost-Maker

Ghost Maker DC Comics Costume – 90s Redesign

Ghost-Maker is a character created by James Tynion IV & Carlo Pagulayan for DC Comics in 2020. Ghost-Maker mirrors Batman in many respects, from forms of training to mode of operation, but mainly differs in ideology. Ghost-Maker’s real name is Khoa Khan, and he is an elite assassin who traveled the globe with Batman, mastering various martial arts and techniques.

Batman’s hero journey begins with him travelling around the world to hone the skills needed to become Gotham’s Dark Knight. Khoa was along for this journey but has a vastly different outlook on crime-fighting. He views it as a perfected system and strives for perfection, letting his ego take precedence over justice.

Therefore, Ghost-Maker serves as a foil for Batman’s ideology and no-kill rule. He perceives Batman’s no-kill rule as inefficient and values efficiency over morality. He fights crime as a symbol of fear, with comparable skills and intellect, and only differs from Batman in one metric: mentality. As a result, the two have come to blows over their individual ideologies.

                        The Batman Who Laughs

Comic book art: The Batman Who Laughs holds chains in DC comics

The Batman Who Laughs is an amalgamation of the Joker and Batman that retains all of Batman’s intelligence but none of his mortality, created by Scott Snyder & Greg Capullo in 2017. The Batman Who Laughs served as a terrifying villain in DC Comics’ Dark Nights: Metal and Death Metal.

The Batman Who Laughs is a being that emerges when Batman kills the Joker and is exposed to Joker toxin that slowly transforms him into a Joker-like version of himself. What makes him so terrifying is his willingness to kill, coupled with Batman’s skills and intelligence, presenting as unhinged as the Joker, only with more refined chaos.

Batman has always been a character who toes the line between willpower and obsession. The Batman Who Laughs is a physical manifestation of the endpoint of Batman’s obsession and madness. He is the version of Batman who fully abandons his morality and ideology, giving in to chaos.

                        Marvel’s Comte de Nuit

Comte de Nuit is a French superhero and Batman analogue created by J. Michael Straczynski & Mike McKone for Marvel Comics and first appeared in Fantastic Four (Vol. 1, December 2006). His name translates to “Night Count”, and the Dark Knight clearly inspires his aesthetic. He is Marvel’s homage to the Dark Knight archetype.

What the Comte de Nuit and Batman have in common is a tragic backstory. Comte de Nuit became a crime fighter to avenge the death of his father, who was killed by thieves. And much like the Caped Crusader, he is a part of a superhero team called Les Héros de Paris, fighting alongside other French superheroes.

With a similar aesthetic and character motivation, and his skill in hand-to-hand and gadget-based combat, this character is a love letter to Batman and the masked crime-fighter archetype. His real identity and name remain a mystery in the present canon, but what he represents appears clear as day as a Batman analogue.

                        DC’s Bat-Man of China

Bat-Man of China with League DC

Wang Baixi, the Batman of China, was introduced in 2016 during DC’s Rebirth era and is the tactical mind of the Justice League of China. As his name suggests, Wang Baixi is a Batman created by the Chinese government as its equivalent.

Baixi does not have a tragic backstory like Batman’s and was instead a student at the “Academy of the Bat”, which was created by the Chinese Ministry of Self-Reliance to select who would wear the cowl. Baixi, as the top student, became the Batman of China, notable for his intellect and tactical mind.

As Batman, Baixi is less brooding and more dorky; his Robin is a Robin-bot he created himself rather than a real person. However, he shares the same tactical prowess and intellect as the Batman readers recognise.

                        DC’s Nightrunner

Nightrunner DC

Nightrunner, also known as Bilal Asselah, is a lesser-known member of the Bat-family who was introduced in 2011 in DC Comics. Bilal Asselah becomes the Batman of Paris after catching Batman’s attention with his courage and moral integrity, officially joining Batman Incorporated, a global initiative where Batman created versions of himself to fight worldwide.

Unlike Bruce Wayne, Bilal Asselah comes from humble beginnings. As a working-class French-Algerian Muslim, Bilal was exposed to the poverty, discrimination, and social injustices that plagued his society. His willingness to stand up for what is right is what led Batman to recruit him into Batman Incorporated as the Batman of Paris.

As the Batman of Paris, Bilal is well-trained in hand-to-hand combat, though he is more reliant on his speed and agility and not brute strength, unlike Batman. His fighting style relies more on his parkour skills and blends street fighting and agility. In addition, he also possesses a tactical mind and amazing intelligence.

                        Minor Threat’s Insomniac

Insomniac is a Batman-type character created by Patton Oswalt, Jordan Blum, and artist Scott Hepburn for Minor Threats comics. He is a vigilante crime fighter who operates as the hero of Twilight City, a very competent, brooding figure feared by villains as a mythic being.

Aptly named, Insomniac does not sleep; he is obsessed with fighting crime and is far more brutal than Batman. He has the staples of expert combat training, detective skills, access to advanced technology and gadgets, genius intellect, and peak human conditioning. It is, however, unclear whether he shares Batman’s no-kill rule.

Ultimately, Insomniac is what results when discipline is taken to the point of obsession. He has no life outside of fighting crime, and he is unable to sleep, stuck in a perpetual state of finding the next case to solve and criminals to beat. He is a portrayal of what Batman would be if he let his obsession consume him.

                        Radiant Black’s Shift

Shift is from the Radiant Black universe created by Kyle Higgins. Like the main character, Radiant Black, he possesses the Radiant Powers. His particular powers are teleportation and spatial manipulation, which only supplement his genius strategic mind, making him a dangerous force to be reckoned with.

The similarities between Shift and Batman lie in their genius-level intellect and strategic thinking. Shift is a master tactician who always plots behind the scenes, hiding his true agenda. They differ in that the shift has powers, whereas Batman does not, but the Dark Knight embodies the essence of the character.

Shift is more of a morally ambiguous figure, not driven by a pursuit of justice, but by the furtherance of his own goals. His emotionally detached approach means Shift would do things Batman would not in the same situations. Shift is therefore a more emotionally detached and methodical Batman, not hampered by moral quandaries.

                        Nemesis

Mark Millar & Steve McNiven’s Nemesis was created in 2010 for Marvel Comics and introduced the character as a dark, inverted mirror of Batman. Nemesis is a character with near-limitless wealth and access to technology and gadgets who, instead of fighting crime, sets out to go after police officers and other authorities.

Nemesis is an anarchic, morally bankrupt version of Batman, who treated crime and killing like a game. He fits firmly into the “evil Batman archetype,” representing everything Batman is against; as such, he dresses in white rather than black. While Batman fights for justice, Nemesis takes pleasure in chaos and murder, treating them like a game.

At first, pretending to have a tragic backstory where his parents were killed, similar to Batman, it is later revealed that Nemesis was a privileged, rich kid who wanted for nothing; his parents were corrupt villains. Instead of travelling the world to learn how to fight crime, he travelled the world to learn the ways of crime and terrorise society.

      Alias

           Bruce Wayne

      FIRST APP

           Detective Comics #27 (1939)

      Created By

                                           Bob Kane, Bill Finger

      Franchise

                                           D.C.

      Race

           Human

      First Appearance

                                           Detective Comics

One of DC’s most iconic heroes, Batman is the vigilante superhero persona of billionaire Bruce Wayne.
