The scene opens to a gang of hyenas circling around a lion pride, spread into two little clusters. The hyenas are getting closer and closer to two of the lions feeding on a carcass. As the hyenas approach one of the two lions, a young lioness roars towards them. The hyenas take this as a clear signal to clear off a bit.

But after a couple seconds, the hyenas just begin closing in once again. Then, from another small huddle of lions of the same pride, a young male stands up. Head lowered and staring straight at the hyenas harassing his siblings, his intentions are clear. As soon as the young male starts walking towards the hyenas, they instantly back off once again. Giving a wide berth to the two lions they were originally harassing, the hyenas seem to realize the challenge they planned is impossible.

A single lion can sometimes drive off several hyenas, but outcomes depend on the number of hyenas present and whether other lions are nearby.

©Mark Sheridan-Johnson/Shutterstock.com

(Mark Sheridan-Johnson/Shutterstock.com)

As young males mature, they may become more conspicuous around carcasses and social interactions, but male lions are usually pushed out of their natal pride by about 2.5 to 4 years of age. They often form coalitions with brothers or other males after leaving their natal pride, because cooperation improves their chances of surviving and eventually taking over a pride. In lion society, related females are the stable core of the pride, while young males usually disperse and later live as nomads or in coalitions before attempting to take over a pride. Female pride members are usually closely related, while male alliances are often based on brothers or other male partners working together after dispersal.

The two are now locked in a standoff, the hyenas trying to circle around the lions. But the kings of the jungle refuse to be intimidated, they’ve made their point. The hyenas make one last approach towards the feeding lions. But now that they’re facing three lions, they give up all hope. The hyenas finally give it up, and in unison turn tail and run. The lions keep their claim on their meal, and the hyenas will have to try stealing from someone else!

These Adolescent Male Lions Will Go From Useful Helper to Evicted In Months!

Three young lion brothers who are still growing their manes, relax beside a water hole in Botswana, with golden hour light. The life of a male lion is far from easy, with different challenges coming up with each stage of life. In the early stages, male lion cubs experience a closely-knit family dynamic. They form strong bonds through playful interactions and grooming rituals that lay the foundation for their social structure. From birth to around two years old, they frolic in the protective care of their mother, aunts, and siblings. For male lion cubs specifically, early social bonds may help shape future coalitions, which can later help them challenge other males and take over a pride.

From about two to four years of age, male lions become subadults and are approaching the age when they usually leave or are forced out of their natal pride. This phase is the training ground for the challenges that lie ahead. During this stage, they continue developing strength and social skills, but this period is usually followed by dispersal from the natal pride. This all serves as a training ground for the challenges that lie ahead.

Watch the Video

Click here to watch the video.

The post Watch a Young Lion Turn the Tables on a Pack of Harassing Hyenas appeared first on A-Z Animals.

[8
146,85,46,175585,175584
0":"post-363968","1":"post","2":"type-post","3":"status-publish","4":"format-standard","5":"has-post-thumbnail","7":"category-entertainment","8":"tag-entertainment","9":"tag-il","10":"tag-israel","11":"tag-natal-pride","12":"tag-pride-members
["GET
