Hairy Bikers star Si King has revealed he felt a “sense of guilt” upon his return to television for a solo show, following the death of his beloved co-star, David “Dave” Myers. Myers, who achieved widespread fame alongside King on the BBC’s popular cooking and motorcycling series, passed away at 66 in 2024 after a cancer diagnosis. King described the experience of filming his first independent venture, Channel 4\u2019s Top of the Stops, without his lifelong friend and colleague as an “odd experience”.<\/p>\n
Speaking to Lauren Laverne on BBC Radio 4\u2019s Desert Island Discs, the presenter said: \u201cThe first year, I didn\u2019t want to do anything at all, I just didn\u2019t have it in me and then when I was shooting the show, I felt a sense of guilt that I was doing something that when he wasn\u2019t there,<\/p>\n
\u201cIt was a very odd experience, because I was having to remember and deliver pieces to camera that I\u2019d go \u2018ah you can do this\u2019.<\/p>\n
\u201cWhat was wonderful was that I had my lovely, lovely, gorgeous, talented crew, and the creative shorthand just came back like that.<\/p>\n
\u201cIt was wonderful, it was just odd that he wasn\u2019t there.\u201d<\/p>\n
King went on to discuss Myer\u2019s decision to \u201cfight\u201d following his diagnosis and about focusing on \u201ckeeping those motorcycle wheels turning.\u201d<\/p>\n
The success of the Hairy Bikers and the demand that came with it, including being contracted to work for 200 days a year, came with its downsides, King added, including putting distance between his family and friends, adding that it contributed to his split with his ex-wife Jane.<\/p>\n

He said: \u201cIt just changes you.<\/p>\n
\u201cI\u2019d seen so much I didn\u2019t know what to say anymore.<\/p>\n
\u201cI didn\u2019t know what to say to anybody.<\/p>\n
\u201cBecause I\u2019m not there, I don\u2019t know the day-to-day of everybody\u2019s lives, and what the crack is.<\/p>\n
\u201cWhat then happens is that you become, as a person, very inconsistent emotionally because you don\u2019t know where to put it.<\/p>\n
\u201cAnd that\u2019s very difficult for Jane particularly, the mother of my children, and it\u2019s the most destructive thing because nobody ever knows where they are, and there\u2019s no sense of deep security there, which was the antithesis of what I wanted.<\/p>\n
\u201cI don\u2019t mind admitting that I completely lost myself. But that was a very private thing for me and my family and my friends.<\/p>\n
\u201cAnd it wasn\u2019t horrible. It was just well, he\u2019s away from home and living in this mad world.\u201d<\/p>\n
The TV cooking duo published a number of cookbooks and presented shows including The Hairy Bikers Ride Again, The Hairy Bikers\u2019 Food Tour Of Britain, The Hairy Bikers: Mums Know Best, The Hairy Bikers\u2019 Cook Off and Hairy Bikers\u2019 Best Of British.<\/p>\n
