After a long delay, the video game adaptation \u201cMortal Kombat II\u201d finally hits cinemas on May 8th, and the first long-range projections are now out.<\/p>\n

Box-Office Theory<\/a> is forecasting that the action-fantasy film is on track for a domestic opening weekend in the $40-55 million range.<\/p>\n

While that sounds a little low, the outlet generally estimates at the low end of expectations because the projections are far enough out that surges in short-term interest aren\u2019t accounted for.<\/p>\n

For example, they projected \u201cScream 7\u201d opening around $50 million when it actually did $64 million, and projected \u201cProject Hail Mary\u201d at $42-60 million when it actually did $81 million.<\/p>\n

Even if the film comes in at these projections, it looks set to at least double the pandemic-impacted and HBO Max day-and-date release affected $23 million opening weekend haul of its 2021 predecessor.<\/p>\n

The film will also be the third weekend in a row with a title set to open above $40 million as \u201cMichael\u201d hits on April 24th and \u201cThe Devil Wears Prada 2\u201d arrives on May 1st \u2013 both films projected to open with at least $55 million and likely closer to $80 million.<\/p>\n

The following week (May 15th) will be quiet with smaller films like Guy Ritchie\u2019s \u201cIn the Grey\u201d and Curry Barker\u2019s \u201cObsession\u201d opening before every week sees a major title opening from \u201cThe Mandalorian & Grogu\u201d on May 22nd through to \u201cSpider-Man: Brand New Day\u201d on July 31st.<\/p>\n
