The Houthis could slam it shut"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>      London\u00a0\u2014\u00a0\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmncxn6i4001y27qk10nm081i@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            The world, hungry for oil, got a modest reprieve earlier this month when Saudi Arabia began diverting millions of barrels of crude \u2014ordinarily destined for ships transiting the blockaded Strait of Hormuz \u2014 to its Red Sea port of Yanbu.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmnd3sgc200533b6qwuyea3om@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            But over the weekend <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2026\/03\/29\/world\/yemen-houthis-iran-war-intl\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Iran-backed Houthi militants<\/a> entered the war in an escalation that threatens to sever even that lifeline.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmnd6ow8w0000356qk5tu4b1g@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Anything that jeopardizes Saudi oil flows out of the Red Sea will put more upward pressure on global oil prices, said Richard Bronze, co-founder and head of geopolitics at research firm Energy Aspects.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmncxtacb00063b6qjvsq9xju@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            As many as 4.6 million barrels per day were loaded onto vessels at Yanbu over the past two weeks \u2014 more than three times the average over 2025, according to shipping data firm Vortexa.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmncy2jsw000d3b6q9k0mi75u@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            That is small compensation for the 15 million barrels the world is missing out on every day the Strait of Hormuz remains shut. But those 4.6 million barrels are enough to rattle supply and, in an extremely sensitive global oil market, choking off another critical trade route would raise oil prices further and trigger or <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2026\/03\/25\/asia\/asia-hormuz-energy-austerity-fuel-intl-hnk\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">exacerbate<\/a> local fuel shortages.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmnd4hd7p005v3b6qknydhkzw@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            In late 2023, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2024\/02\/08\/business\/red-sea-crisis-global-trade-explained\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Houthi militants<\/a> based in Yemen began attacking commercial vessels passing through the Bab-el-Mandeb Strait \u2014 located at the southern tip of the Red Sea and meaning \u201cGate of Tears\u201d in Arabic \u2014 in retaliation for Israel\u2019s war in Gaza. The attacks prompted shipping companies to use a longer route, adding weeks onto journeys and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2024\/02\/08\/business\/red-sea-crisis-global-trade-explained\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">forcing them to spend more<\/a> on fuel, insurance and seafarers\u2019 wages.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmnd53rze00733b6qip8u4ycj@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Over the first 28 days of March, the amount of crude oil transiting the Bab-el-Mandeb Strait jumped by 21% compared with February, according to Vortexa. Those shipments are now potential targets for renewed Houthi attacks.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmnczg7y000163b6q6zzzij2t@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            The price of Brent, the global oil benchmark, has soared by about 50% since the Iran war started on February 28 to trade around the $110-a-barrel level Monday.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmnd4e69c005q3b6qid8ai7hw@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            If the Bab-el-Mandeb Strait also becomes too dangerous for tankers to cross, Brent is \u201cvery likely\u201d to surge past $150 a barrel over the next few months, which is sooner than currently forecast, according to Artem Abramov, head of oil and natural gas research at Rystad Energy, a consultancy.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmnczbjqo00103b6qrtokd8zq@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            The waterway\u2019s closure will \u201cjust break the system much faster,\u201d he told CNN Monday. \u201cEven the very threat of Red Sea closure is likely to impose continuous upward pressure on insurance, freight and ultimately most oil price benchmarks in the next days.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmnd41a5g005c3b6qo4lm8xze@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            The Houthis officially entered the war Saturday, when they fired two missiles toward Israel. The day before, Mohammed Mansour, deputy information minister in the Houthi government, told CNN that closing the Bab el-Mandeb Strait \u201cis a viable option, and the consequences will be borne by the American and Israeli aggressors.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmnd1kz5o002s3b6qn1btigd3@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            The Houthis have a range of weapons, including drones and anti-ship missiles, posing enormous risk to ships passing the strait.\n    <\/p>\n<p>       <img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/il\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/03\/gettyimages-2268213244-20260330114213976.jpg\" alt=\"A missile launched from Yemen at Israel sighted in the sky over Hebron, West Bank, on March 28, 2026.\" class=\"image_large__dam-img image_large__dam-img--loading\" onload=\"this.classList.remove('image_large__dam-img--loading')\" onerror=\"imageLoadError(this)\" height=\"2044\" width=\"3000\" loading=\"lazy\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmnd21fqu003k3b6qbotb8z0u@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            To avoid the waterway, oil tankers leaving Yanbu \u2014 with the vast majority bound for Asia \u2014 would need to take a more circuitous and vastly longer route, travelling up through the Suez Canal at the northern tip of the Red Sea, west through the Mediterranean Sea, swooping down the western coast of Africa and across the Indian Ocean.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmnd1yq41003i3b6q5t50w1cv@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cIf the Houthis start to threaten vessels then, at a minimum, this will add several weeks to the voyage times to Asia,\u201d Bronze at Energy Aspects told CNN. \u201cThat would deepen the crude supply crunch in Asia.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmnd0wkhh00293b6qt7dhtow7@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Asia is bearing the brunt of the global oil supply shock. The region relies on the Middle East for about 60% of its oil, and governments have taken measures to conserve energy during the crisis.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmnd4wy7w006b3b6qhcw0afuu@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2026\/03\/24\/middleeast\/us-israel-iran-middle-east-war-day-26-what-we-know-intl-hnk\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Philippines<\/a>, for example, has declared a state of energy emergency and shortened the work week for some government workers to four days, while South Korea has advised citizens to take shorter showers.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmnd01n2y001a3b6qzx6y6v9n@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            So far this month, all of the oil leaving Yanbu and passing through the Bab el-Mandeb Strait was destined for Asia, according to Muyu Xu, a senior crude oil analyst at Kpler, a trade data and analytics company.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmnd34xw2004k3b6qgevxsltu@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            If any Houthi attacks were to effectively block the strait, Xu told CNN, the Saudis would either start prioritizing crude shipments for nearby Europe \u2014thus depriving Asia \u2014 or route oil tankers to Asia through the Suez Canal.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmnd36sq9004m3b6qrmxzqhbm@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Xu said many parts of Asia will start to see crude shortages in April as they run down their existing stocks. \u201cIf they cannot get the Saudi crude on time, it will just make their near-term supply crunch even worse,\u201d she added.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmndavlq6000a3b6raykagusj@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            High oil prices are \u201cone issue, but most importantly, they just cannot get enough oil,\u201d she said.\n    <\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"London\u00a0\u2014\u00a0 The world, hungry for oil, got a modest reprieve earlier this month when Saudi Arabia began diverting&hellip;\n","protected":false},"author":2,"featured_media":366443,"comment_status":"","ping_status":"","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"footnotes":""},"categories":[5],"tags":[114,85,46],"class_list":{"0":"post-366442","1":"post","2":"type-post","3":"status-publish","4":"format-standard","5":"has-post-thumbnail","7":"category-business","8":"tag-business","9":"tag-il","10":"tag-israel"},"_links":{"self":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/il\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/366442","targetHints":{"allow":["GET"]}}],"collection":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/il\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts"}],"about":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/il\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/types\/post"}],"author":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/il\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/users\/2"}],"replies":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/il\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/comments?post=366442"}],"version-history":[{"count":0,"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/il\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/366442\/revisions"}],"wp:featuredmedia":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/il\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media\/366443"}],"wp:attachment":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/il\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media?parent=366442"}],"wp:term":[{"taxonomy":"category","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/il\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/categories?post=366442"},{"taxonomy":"post_tag","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/il\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/tags?post=366442"}],"curies":[{"name":"wp","href":"https:\/\/api.w.org\/{rel}","templated":true}]}}
