Ram Gopal Varma<\/a> has opened up about the impact of Aditya Dhar<\/a>‘s Dhurandhar and its sequel Dhurandhar: The Revenge starring Ranveer Singh<\/a>, drawing a sharp comparison with Sandeep Reddy Vanga’s Animal starring Ranbir Kapoor and explaining why the former has left a deeper impression on him.In a recent interaction with Galatta Plus, the filmmaker spoke about scale, storytelling, and how Dhurandhar 2 breaks conventional filmmaking patterns.<\/p>\n

\u2018Animal is still within a template\u2019<\/p>\n

Explaining the difference between the two films, Varma said, \u201cSee, the difference I\u2019ll tell you… Animal is still another version of The Godfather. Instead of Michael Corleone, you have Ranbir Kapoor. It\u2019s still a father-son story where the father is attacked and the son takes over. It\u2019s within that template.\u201d\u201cDhurandhar… I don\u2019t believe it is like that. The nearest example I can give is something on the scale of a James Bond kind of film,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n

\u2018Dhurandhar\u2019s scale is too big\u2019<\/p>\n

He further highlighted how scale plays a key role in setting the film apart. \u201cAnimal didn\u2019t have that scale. The villains were more ordinary. The shock element was in the scenes and characterisation of Ranbir Kapoor. But Dhurandhar\u2019s scale is too big,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

\u2018You don\u2019t look up to Animal\u2019s hero, but you do to Hamza\u2019<\/p>\n

Speaking about characterisation, Varma said, \u201cNobody will look up to Ranbir Kapoor in Animal. You enjoy his performance, you are shocked by what he does.\u201d\u201cBut characters like Shiva or Michael Corleone\u2014you look up to them. Same thing with Hamza,\u201d he added.He emphasised that the protagonist in Dhurandhar stands out because of his understated nature. \u201cMost of the time, Hamza doesn\u2019t explain himself. You infer what he\u2019s feeling… many times he\u2019s just observing, not saying anything,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

\u2018I couldn\u2019t believe a big hero took this role\u2019<\/p>\n

Varma also expressed surprise that a mainstream star chose such an internalised role. \u201cI could not believe that a big hero would take up such a role which is so internalised,\u201d he said.Drawing a comparison with earlier eras, he added, \u201cFrom Amitabh Bachchan\u2019s time, even if there was internal anger, there were punchy dialogues explaining everything. Here, there are so many close-ups where you are left to interpret what the hero is feeling.\u201d <\/p>\n

\u2018You can\u2019t get the brain of Aditya Dhar\u2019<\/p>\n

Crediting director Aditya Dhar, Varma said the film\u2019s impact stems from his vision.\u201cYou can have tons of money, but where will you get Aditya? The nuances, the character detail, the emotional context\u2014you cannot understand that on paper,\u201d he said.Recalling a scene, he added, \u201cWhen he burns the photo of his wife and son, I got a lump in my throat. That is something you can never explain on paper.\u201dVarma also spoke about how the film redefines heroism. \u201cEarlier, heroes didn\u2019t show pain because fans wouldn\u2019t like it. But here, when Hamza is stabbed, I\u2019ve never seen such genuine pain in a hero. That realism makes you connect more,\u201d he said. <\/p>\n

\u2018It\u2019s going to disrupt everything\u2019<\/p>\n

Summing up his thoughts, Varma said the film will have a lasting impact on the industry.\u201cIn one line\u2014the difference is this: other filmmakers make what they think the audience wants to see.
