\n\tThe 73rd Sydney Film Festival<\/a> has unveiled an initial slate of 13 films ahead of its full program reveal, offering an early look at what festivalgoers can expect when the event runs June 3\u201314 in the Australian city. The full lineup drops May 6.<\/p>\n

\n\tAustralian stories lead the local contingent. Selina Miles\u2019 \u201cSilenced\u201d follows lawyer Jennifer Robinson and survivors including Brittany Higgins and Amber Heard, with defamation law and the #MeToo movement as its frame. Ian Darling AO, whose \u201cThe Final Quarter\u201d screened at Sydney in 2019, returns with \u201cIn the Valley,\u201d a portrait of rural life in Kangaroo Valley drawn from the rhythms and traditions of the community there.<\/p>\n

\n\tGus Van Sant\u2019s \u201cDead Man\u2019s Wire\u201d brings Bill Skarsg\u00e5rd, Dacre Montgomery and Al Pacino<\/a> to a recreation of a 1977 hostage standoff that played out live on American television. Documentary \u201cBroken English\u201d examines the life and legacy of Marianne Faithfull, with Tilda Swinton and George MacKay, from the makers of \u201c20,000 Days on Earth,\u201d which bowed at Sydney in 2014.<\/p>\n

\n\tTwo titles arrive fresh from major festival wins. \u0130lker \u00c7atak\u2019s \u201cYellow Letters\u201d took the Golden Bear in Berlin; it follows a family\u2019s collapse after a minor act of defiance triggers authoritarian repercussions in T\u00fcrkiye. Rafael Manuel\u2019s debut feature \u201cFilipi\u00f1ana,\u201d a Sundance award winner, tracks a teenage tee-girl at a Manila golf course whose gleaming surface conceals class violence beneath.<\/p>\n

\n\tIldik\u00f3 Enyedi\u2019s \u201cSilent Friend,\u201d winner of the Fipresci Prize at Venice\u2019s 82nd edition, stars Tony Leung Chiu-wai<\/a> and L\u00e9a Seydoux in a multigenerational drama anchored by a ginkgo tree. Ulrike Ottinger\u2019s \u201cThe Blood Countess\u201d gives Isabelle Huppert<\/a> a vampire to play, scripted by Nobel laureate Elfriede Jelinek (\u201cThe Piano Teacher\u201d). Pete Ohs\u2019 \u201cErupcja\u201d follows a Warsaw getaway that begins to unravel, with musician Charli xcx in a lead role.<\/p>\n

\n\tMarwan Hamed\u2019s \u201cEl Sett\u201d brings a large-scale treatment to the life of Umm Kulthum, tracing the Egyptian singer\u2019s rise to become the Arab world\u2019s most celebrated voice. Damien Hauser\u2019s \u201cMemory of Princess Mumbi\u201d imagines a future African kingdom caught between AI and tradition; Firouzeh Khosrovani\u2019s \u201cPast Future Continuous,\u201d an IDFA winner, follows a woman who fled Iran reconnecting with her aging parents through cameras in their Tehran home. Tamra Davis\u2019 \u201cThe Best Summer,\u201d a Sundance world premiere, assembles archival footage from Australia\u2019s 1995 Summersault tour, with Beastie Boys, Sonic Youth and Foo Fighters among those captured.<\/p>\n
