{"id":369113,"date":"2026-04-01T09:17:10","date_gmt":"2026-04-01T09:17:10","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/il\/369113\/"},"modified":"2026-04-01T09:17:10","modified_gmt":"2026-04-01T09:17:10","slug":"uk-food-inflation-could-hit-9-this-year-as-iran-war-drives-up-energy-prices-food-drink-industry","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/il\/369113\/","title":{"rendered":"UK food inflation \u2018could hit 9% this year\u2019 as Iran war drives up energy prices | Food &#038; drink industry"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Food inflation could hit 9% in the UK this year, even if the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/world\/strait-of-hormuz\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">strait of Hormuz<\/a> opens within the next few weeks, figures suggest, as the war in Iran pushes up energy prices.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">The Food and Drink Federation, which represents 12,000 food and drink manufacturers, has predicted that prices will rise by \u201cat least\u201d 9% by the end of 2026, almost tripling a forecast made before the Middle East conflict of 3.2%.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Dr Liliana Danila, the chief economist at the FDF, said the industry was already facing big rises in energy, transport and packaging costs, as well as disruptions across its supply chains.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">\u201cThe current situation is unprecedented and hard to predict,\u201d she said. \u201cGiven the scale and speed of these cost increases, and despite companies\u2019 best efforts not to pass price increases on, it\u2019s clear that food inflation is going to rise in the months ahead.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">The 9% forecast assumes that the key strait of Hormuz shipping channel will reopen to cargo traffic within the next two to three weeks, and the majority of major energy facilities, such as oil, gas and fertiliser sites, return to normal within a year.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">The warning comes as the chancellor, Rachel Reeves, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/business\/2026\/apr\/01\/chancellor-meets-uk-supermarket-bosses-discuss-cost-living\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">prepares to meet the bosses of the UK\u2019s biggest supermarkets<\/a> on Wednesday afternoon.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Reeves is expected to meet executives including the bosses of Sainsbury\u2019s, Tesco and Morrisons to discuss the potential impact on the cost of living and possible supply squeezes triggered by the conflict in the Middle East.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">UK farmers and producers have warned that without government help there could be shortages of domestic tomatoes, cucumbers, peppers and aubergines.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Many businesses, which <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/business\/2026\/feb\/22\/food-production-hike-in-energy-standing-charges-inflation\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">typically fix their energy contracts from April<\/a>, will be hit by a sharp rise in costs from Wednesday.
