{"id":369466,"date":"2026-04-01T13:56:08","date_gmt":"2026-04-01T13:56:08","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/il\/369466\/"},"modified":"2026-04-01T13:56:08","modified_gmt":"2026-04-01T13:56:08","slug":"another-african-country-has-cleared-its-debt-to-the-international-monetary-fund","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/il\/369466\/","title":{"rendered":"Another African country has cleared its debt to the International Monetary Fund"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>\n        This reimbursement entails that the country has cancelled an IMF mission intended for later this year, in August, despite no official details on the debt repayment from either Mozambique or the IMF.\n    <\/p>\n<p>\n        In a research note dated March 27, F\u00e1usio Muss\u00e1, chief economist at Standard Bank in Mozambique, disclosed that Mozambique had settled its debt to the global lender, citing information from the IMF itself.\n    <\/p>\n<p>\n        The IMF in February had issued a warning to the Southern African country that its debt was in distress and on an unsustainable path.\n    <\/p>\n<p>\n        In March, another prominent global lender, the World Bank, warned that the country\u2019s current economic trajectory put $50 billion in gas projects at risk.\n    <\/p>\n<p>\n        Mozambique&#8217;s foreign exchange reserves, which stood at approximately $4.15 billion towards the end of January, were nearly at an all-time high.\n    <\/p>\n<p>\n        Estimates from Standard Bank show that these reserves are expected to decrease to $3.5 billion following the country&#8217;s debt repayment to the IMF, despite the ongoing accumulation of arrears with other bilateral and multilateral creditors.\n    <\/p>\n<p>        Other African countries that have recently cleared their IMF debt <\/p>\n<p>                    <img width=\"790\" height=\"528\" alt=\"Abebe Selassie, IMF\u2019s Director for Africa\" title=\"Abebe Selassie, IMF\u2019s Director for Africa\" class=\"image lazyloaded imgWithMetaData\" src=\"data:image\/svg+xml;charset=utf8,%3Csvg%20xmlns%3D'http%3A%2F%2Fwww.w3.org%2F2000%2Fsvg'%20width%3D'790'%20height%3D'528'%20data-ring-placeholder%3D'1'%3E%3C%2Fsvg%3E\" data-original=\"https:\/\/ocdn.eu\/pulscms-transforms\/1\/tBEktkpTURBXy9kMDA0MzAwYTVlNWM0MTkxMWY0NjczNmUwNGY3YjNjYy5qcGeRlQLNAxbNAhDCww\" fetchpriority=\"low\" decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\"\/> <\/p>\n<p>\n        Last year, a couple of African countries, including Nigeria and Namibia, cleared or at least reduced their outstanding debts to the IMF.\n    <\/p>\n<p>\n        In May 2025, Nigeria repaid a $3.4 billion emergency loan borrowed from the International Monetary Fund (IMF) under the Rapid Financing Instrument (RFI), which was accessed in 2020 to cushion the economic impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic.\n    <\/p>\n<p>\n        <a href=\"https:\/\/africa.businessinsider.com\/local\/markets\/namibia-vows-to-pay-dollar750-million-of-its-debt-in-a-single-day\/m8drdlg\" id=\"fbcc384d-62fd-4e60-b2d7-39bccfbee75d\" data-link-role-code=\"open_new_tab\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">For Namibia<\/a>, the Southern African country, in October of the same year, committed to a significant reduction of its debt obligations, amounting to $750 million.\n    <\/p>\n<p>\n        The IMF data portal has 45 African countries listed with some form of outstanding debt;
