A senior Iranian official has denied US President Donald Trump\u2019s claim that Iran\u2019s \u201cnew regime president\u201d has asked for a ceasefire, as the United States and Israel continue their war on the country<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Reporting from the Iranian capital on Wednesday, Al Jazeera\u2019s Ali Hashem said a senior Iranian official had rejected Trump\u2019s post on social media claiming that, \u201cIran\u2019s New Regime President \u2026 has just asked the United States of America for a CEASEFIRE!\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cThe Iranians are denying that they\u2019ve asked for any ceasefire,\u201d Hashem said.<\/p>\n

In a post on his Truth Social platform, Trump earlier on Wednesday had said his administration would consider the purported ceasefire request when the Strait of Hormuz \u201cis open, free, and clear\u201d.<\/p>\n

\u201cUntil then, we are blasting Iran into oblivion or, as they say, back to the Stone Ages!!!\u201d he wrote.<\/p>\n

Trump\u2019s claim comes just hours before he is set to deliver a speech at 9pm local time in Washington, DC, on Wednesday (01:00 GMT on Thursday) to provide what the White House said<\/a> will be \u201can important update on Iran\u201d.<\/p>\n

The Trump administration has faced mounting pressure over the US-Israeli war on Iran amid soaring global energy prices and widespread opposition to the conflict<\/a> among the US public.<\/p>\n

On Monday, Trump told reporters<\/a> at the White House that prices would \u201ccome tumbling down\u201d whenever the US decides to end the war \u2013 something he said could happen within the next two to three weeks.<\/p>\n

But the US leader\u2019s threat on Wednesday to continue \u201cblasting Iran into oblivion\u201d until the Strait of Hormuz is reopened has raised questions about whether the war will end as soon as Trump has claimed.<\/p>\n

The strait \u2013 a critical Gulf waterway<\/a> through which about one-fifth of the world\u2019s oil and liquified natural gas supplies transit \u2013 has been effectively shuttered as a result of the war, raising serious concerns about a global economic downturn.<\/p>\n

Mohamad Elmasry, a professor at the Doha Institute for Graduate Studies, said Trump, in his Truth Social post on Wednesday, was \u201cgiving people hope in one breath and \u2026 taking it away in the next\u201d.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe language that he\u2019s using is very important. Yesterday, he said he wants to bomb Iran back into the Stone Age, and now he\u2019s using this forceful language [about bombing] them into oblivion,\u201d Elmasry told Al Jazeera.<\/p>\n

\u201cThis is not exactly encouraging, particularly when you consider the context that Israel and the United States have already hit hundreds of schools and hospitals [in Iran] and thousands of residential homes,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

\u201cThey are using 2,000-pound [900kg] bombs to take out entire city blocks. So this is not exactly a careful, precision operation. They are knocking out a lot of civilian infrastructure.\u201d<\/p>\n

Reporting from the White House, Al Jazeera\u2019s Alan Fisher also said Trump is unlikely to announce an immediate end to the war during his Wednesday evening address.<\/p>\n
