space telescope that maps stars across the Milky Way, confirming that a missing stellar population was there all along.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Their discovery begins to close one of the field\u2019s most persistent gaps between prediction and observation, and redirects the search for what remains unseen.<\/p>\n<p>Where the clues hid<br \/>\n<a href=\"https:\/\/earthsnap.onelink.me\/3u5Q\/ags2loc4\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">&#13;<br \/>\n    <img decoding=\"async\" class=\"fit-picture\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/il\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/12\/1766790432_598_earthsnap-banner-news.webp.webp\" alt=\"EarthSnap\"\/>&#13;<br \/>\n<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Inside <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aanda.org\/articles\/aa\/full_html\/2023\/06\/aa45591-22\/aa45591-22.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">Gaia\u2019s catalog<\/a> of 12.4 million variable sources, 649 objects had already been flagged as possible matches.<\/p>\n<p>Working through that list, Stavros Akras at the National Observatory of Athens (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.noa.gr\/en\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">NOA<\/a>) showed that 13 were real systems.<\/p>\n<p>Most had been cataloged as slow-pulsing variable stars, which meant ordinary labels had hidden stranger systems in plain sight.<\/p>\n<p>That result suggests the missing population was not simply absent, but scattered across surveys that had never been read together.<\/p>\n<p>How the pairs work<\/p>\n<p>Gas flowing between two mismatched stars powers a symbiotic star, a long-lived pairing of a giant and compact star.<\/p>\n<p>As that gas falls toward a white dwarf, a dense burned-out stellar core, it heats and can light up surrounding hydrogen.<\/p>\n<p>Because the giant star can dominate visible light, many of these binaries look ordinary until another <a href=\"https:\/\/www.earth.com\/news\/young-men-show-stronger-support-for-traditional-marriage-roles-than-older-generations\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">survey<\/a> catches the hot companion.<\/p>\n<p>That camouflage helps explain why theory has long predicted far more systems than astronomers had actually pinned down.<\/p>\n<p>How Gaia helped<\/p>\n<p>Instead of relying on one telescope alone, the team cross-checked Gaia against optical, infrared, and ultraviolet sky surveys.<\/p>\n<p>Each data set contributed a different clue, from cool dust around the giant star to hotter light from the companion.<\/p>\n<p>For objects missing optical data, Gaia\u2019s low-resolution spectra supplied colors that exposed <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencedirect.com\/topics\/physics-and-astronomy\/h-alpha-line\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">H-alpha<\/a>, a red glow from excited hydrogen gas.<\/p>\n<p>That workaround let the search reach beyond the limited footprint of specialized ground surveys and rescue sources they never covered.<\/p>\n<p>What the numbers show<\/p>\n<p>From 649 suspects, only 54 survived the combined infrared and optical screens, and 13 stood out as the strongest new finds.<\/p>\n<p>Ten were relatively cleaner systems dominated by starlight, while three were dustier versions wrapped in thicker material.<\/p>\n<p>Every one of those 13 also showed hydrogen emission and molecular bands, broad absorption patterns made by cooler gases.<\/p>\n<p>That combination is hard to fake, which is why the authors treated the candidates as bona fide members.<\/p>\n<p>Why they stayed hidden<\/p>\n<p>Several of the 13 had been cataloged as variable stars, a reasonable mistake when variability looks clearer than identity.<\/p>\n<p>Across much of the sky, surveys that catch H-alpha do not cover every location, and faint sources often fall through.<\/p>\n<p>Elsewhere, the red giant can outshine the hotter companion so completely that the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.earth.com\/news\/cosmic-interstellar-channel-tunnel-connects-our-solar-system-to-other-stars\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">system<\/a> masquerades as an ordinary cool star.<\/p>\n<p>Those biases help explain why the observed census has lagged behind population models by such a wide margin.<\/p>\n<p>Testing the workaround<\/p>\n<p>Confidence in the computer-built colors mattered because several new systems sat outside the ground surveys that confirm hydrogen emission.<\/p>\n<p>Comparisons with observed measurements showed the generated colors tracked real ones closely enough to remain useful for screening.<\/p>\n<p>Agreement was stronger in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.earth.com\/news\/one-of-the-largest-stars-in-the-universe-suddenly-changed-color\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">color<\/a> differences than in raw brightness, which is exactly what matters for spotting unusual emitters.<\/p>\n<p>That means Gaia can now help classify candidates even when no follow-up spectrum arrives right away.<\/p>\n<p>Why the count matters<\/p>\n<p>Population models have long produced many more symbiotic systems than observers could confirm, leaving theorists unsure which assumptions were failing.
