The MCC has ruled out buying or investing in Middlesex as their \u00adtenants at Lord\u2019s begin another \u00adseason in a state of crisis.<\/p>\n

A group of distinguished former players, led by the ex-England captain Mike Gatting, has called on the chair, \u00adRichard Sykes, to stand down because of poor performances on the field and longstanding financial and governance problems, with an open letter claiming that Middlesex are \u201c\u00addrifting towards irrelevance.\u201d<\/a><\/p>\n

As Middlesex\u2019s landlords since 1877 with annual revenues of around \u00a370m an MCC<\/a> takeover has long been mooted as a potential solution to the club\u2019s problems, but it will not happen under their present leadership.<\/p>\n

While MCC remain committed to extending Middlesex\u2019s lease at Lord\u2019s and will provide further help where possible, there are no plans to offer them direct financial assistance or become more involved in the running of the club, as there is no business case to do so.<\/p>\n

The MCC\u2019s membership \u00adsecretary, Mahdi Choudhury, was seconded to Middlesex as interim chief \u00adoperating officer this year after the \u00adsus\u00adpension of the club\u2019s chief executive, Andrew Cornish<\/a>, but he will return to his employers this month.<\/p>\n

Cornish has taken leave of absence from Middle\u00adsex pending the outcome of an investigation by the Cricket<\/a> \u00adRegulator into allegations of misconduct, which he denies.<\/p>\n

While the MCC share the \u00adconcerns of many in the game about Middle\u00adsex\u2019s plight, the leadership regard their primary responsibility as \u00adserving the interests of their 24,000 members as well as providing leadership for the sport as a whole through their new global advisory board and numerous charitable initiatives. MCC\u00a0is also 51% owner of the London Spirit Hundred franchise, along with the so-called Tech Titans consortium that paid \u00a3145m for their 49% share.<\/p>\n

In addition to their governance issues, which could result in Sykes facing a vote of no confidence from members at the club\u2019s annual \u00adgeneral meeting on 15 April, Middlesex\u2019s financial problems are compounded by the fact that they cannot access the \u00a324m they are theoretically owed from the ECB\u2019s part-sale of the eight Hundred franchises.<\/p>\n

In order to prevent the \u00a3500m windfall being squandered on wages and operating costs the ECB insists the counties can use it only to clear debt, which Middlesex do not have despite posting losses last year, or for major infrastructure projects.<\/p>\n

While Middlesex would like to build their own second home<\/a> away from Lord\u2019s, \u00a324m is insufficient to do so, and a proposed joint venture with American investors was blocked by the ECB last year as it would breach their County Partnership Agreement, which prohibits external influence.<\/p>\n

Breaching the CPA would lead to a loss of ECB funding, which accounts for 60% of Middlesex\u2019s income, so is a non-starter.<\/p>\n

As a result Middlesex are exploring taking the club into private ownership, but the process of demutualisation would require a 75% majority vote from a turnout of at least 50% of their membership, which Sykes described last year as \u201ca challenge, both logistically and emotionally\u201d.<\/p>\n
