There are growing fears that jet fuel supplies could be disrupted during the summer months if the war in Iran<\/a> continues throughout April and beyond.<\/p>\n

The concerns were raised by Ryanair chief executive Michael O\u2019Leary<\/a>, but also by senior Government figures here and the head of the International Energy Agency (IEA).<\/p>\n

It comes as US president Donald Trump<\/a> said the United States will be \u201cout of Iran pretty quickly\u201d but could return for \u201cspot hits\u201d<\/a> if needed, in comments made to Reuters news agency.<\/p>\n

In a separate social media post he said Iran\u2019s \u201cnew regime president\u201d had asked for a ceasefire, a claim denied by Tehran.<\/p>\n

Trump\u2019s comments came hours before he was scheduled to make a prime-time television address on Wednesday night.<\/p>\n

Earlier he suggested that securing the key Strait of Hormuz transit route for oil is \u201cnot for us\u201d and estimated the US will be done attacking Iran<\/a> in two to three weeks.<\/p>\n

Speaking to reporters in advance of Wednesday\u2019s Cabinet meeting, Taoiseach Miche\u00e1l Martin<\/a> said \u201cwe want the war to stop\u201d and Trump\u2019s timeline is \u201ctwo or three weeks too long\u201d.<\/p>\n

T\u00e1naiste Simon Harris<\/a> said it \u201cmight sound like a relatively short period of time\u201d, but the economic and humanitarian impact would be \u201cextraordinarily concerning\u201d.<\/p>\n

A Government spokesman said there was discussion of the energy crisis on the margins of Wednesday\u2019s Cabinet meeting as well as at the meeting of Coalition leaders earlier in the morning. <\/p>\n

There are said to be no plans for the Taoiseach to address the nation on the issue as other world leaders have done. The spokesman said it is a \u201cvolatile situation\u201d that the Government is continuing to monitor.<\/p>\n

Airline boss O\u2019Leary suggested on Wednesday that disruptions to jet fuel supply could begin from early May if the war continues beyond the end of April.<\/p>\n

He told Sky News: \u201cThe fuel companies are happy there won\u2019t be any disruption until early May. <\/p>\n

\u201cBut if the war continues, we do run the risk of supply disruptions in Europe in May and June.<\/p>\n

\u201cObviously, we hope the war will finish sooner than that and that the risk to supply will be eliminated.\u201d<\/p>\n

Asked by reporters about these remarks, Martin said: \u201cIf the war continues and if the Hormuz strait remains closed then you have a supply shock hitting the economy, and one of the earlier areas it will hit will be aviation.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe will press for as early an end to this [war] as possible because the sooner this ends and the sooner we see de-escalation across the region, then the greater the prospect of restoring some degree of normality, although it will take a considerable degree of time.\u201d <\/p>\n

Amid the continued closure of the \u200bStrait of Hormuz, IEA executive director Fatih Birol said \u201cthe \u200bloss of oil in April will be \u2060twice\u200b the oil \u200bloss in March.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cThe biggest problem \u2060today is the \u2060lack \u200bof jet fuel and diesel. We are seeing that in Asia, but soon, I think, in April or \u200cMay, it \u2060would come to Europe,\u201d Birol told a podcast \u200cwith Nicolai Tangen, the head of \u200bNorway\u2019s sovereign wealth fund. <\/p>\n

Minister for Transport and Energy Darragh O\u2019Brien said the aviation fuel issue was discussed at a meeting of EU energy ministers. \u201cIf this doesn\u2019t cease soon, there will be impacts on aviation,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

O\u2019Brien said the EU is \u201cacutely aware of it, and I am too. Aviation is critically important to Ireland\u201d. He said European Commission president Ursula von der Leyen is to unveil a package of energy measures next Wednesday that would include aviation. <\/p>\n

Harris said the commission\u2019s proposals are expected to contain \u201csensible ideas that might be offered to the public\u201d but that Irish people \u201care already saying \u2018what can I do in my own home to conserve energy?\u2019\u201d.<\/p>\n

Asked if the Government would be issuing advice to citizens to work from home, he said \u201cthe level of Government advice\u201d would depend on how long the war goes on \u201cbecause every day it goes on, the energy supply crisis worsens\u201d.<\/p>\n
